South Greene is only days away from tipping off the 2025-26 season with familiar faces, new names in new places, but with the same goal in mind. The Rebels are once again led by Coach Terry Hoese going into his 26th season as head coach.
The Rebels have been the strongest contender in the District 1-2A conference title over the last four years with three-straight championships and appearances in four-straight championship games.
South Greene has been the team to beat within their own district, but has its sights set on something bigger. They Rebels been snake bitten in the semifinals round of the region tournament for four years straight. They have been one win away from securing a sectional round game with the opportunity to go to the state tournament, but can’t get over that elusive “hump”.
The 2024-25 Rebels finished 22-10 (9-1) and had their season ended in the Region 1-2A semifinals to Austin East for the second-straight year.
A few key pieces graduated and will leave open spots in the starting rotation. Jase Roderick, Chandler Gamble, Trey Gentry and Micah Shelton graduated in the spring.
This year’s set of seniors will feature Charlie Lane, Cayden Fillers, Lucas Couch, Will Arrowood, Zack Mason, and Brant Wilhoit.
Coach Hoese will look upon his most experienced player in Cayden Fillers to be the anchor of this year’s squad.
“Anchoring it will be Cayden Fillers. He’ll be a senior. 6’6” post player. I’ve got to have a little more out of Cayden this year. He’s kind of been my banger and trash player over the past three years and he’s going to have to score a little bit now and he knows that. I look for good things from Cayden,” Hoese mentioned.
The other returning starter from last season is sophomore sharpshooter Gavin Dyer. Dyer’s growth over the summer will come in handy and help him be a factor in other places other than the three-point line.
“He’s grown. Gavin is probably about 6’3”, 6’4” now. Still able to shoot the ball, but he’s able to go down and do a little more. He can go down in the post and beat and bang a little bit.”
Senior Charlie Lane will step into the starting point guard role that Gentry left last year. Lane’s playmaking ability on the football field is certain to transfer to the hardwood in the winter.
“Charlie Lane will probably be my starting point guard at this point. Charlie played a lot last year and if you’ve seen him play any football, he’s an athlete and a competitor. I look for good things out of Charlie,” Coach Hoese stated.
Rounding out this year’s starting lineup will be seniors Will Arrowood and Lucas Coach. “Will’s a 6’1” mix between a guard and a post. He’s strong down in the post and can finish around the bucket, but he can also shoot it,” Hoese said about Arrowood.
He spoke about Coach by saying, “He’s about 6’2”, 6’3” and athletic and has played a lot over the last couple years.”
The wild card on this year’s roster will be junior Noah Wright. A physical and athletic guy who plays larger than his frame and loves to mix it up.
“Noah Wright is probably going to be my sleeper. I say Noah Wright’s not really a basketball player, but Noah Wright is an athlete. He plays a heck of a lot bigger than what he is. I’ve got him listed at 6’1” and that may be stretching it. He can go rebound. He played a lot last year so he’s going to get his time too.”
The surprise on this year’s roster has been the development of sophomore Jameson White. His growth has impressed Coach Hoese and has him excited for what we could see from the young guard.
“One of the biggest surprises for me right now is Jameson White. He’s running point guard for me right now while football is still playing. He’s a sophomore and only about 5’8”, 5’9”, but he’s playing really well right now. Plays hard, works hard, puts in a lot of time outside the gym and it’s really showing right now. I’m very happy for him,” Hoese exclaimed.
Rounding out South Greene’s list of seniors is guard Brant Wilhoit and guard Zack Mason. “(Wilhoit) gives me some spark and plays hard and can shoot it a little bit,” Hoese says. “(Mason) Played a little bit from time-to-time last year. Played a lot of JV. He can shoot it and plays hard.”
Finishing off on South Greene’s bench is junior Simon Burns, sophomore Alex Leon, and junior Eli Fillers. “I’ve got Simon Burns who’s grown. He’s probably about 6’3”, 6’4” and will see a lot of floor time. Alex Leon is my other sophomore. Right now, he’s playing a lot in the preseason. Alex is coming on and he’ll get some court time as well. Eli Fillers is my only other junior. He jumps well, can shoot it halfway decent, and he’ll give you everything he’s got and plays hard.”
South Greene could be a very deep roster with the potential to see every player touch the court and provide quality minutes.
“I’ve got twelve kids on the roster and to be up front and honest with you, all twelve of these kids may be in every game. Obviously, some of them will play more than others but I don’t care to put any one of these guys in the game,” Hoese said.
South Greene opens up the regular season with Tennessee High inside of Viking Hall on Tuesday, November 18th. They have David Crockett, Grainger, University High, and North Greene on their non-conference schedule.
The District 1-2A landscape will look mostly the same with one subtraction and addition. South Greene is joined by West Greene, Chuckey-Doak, Happy Valley, Johnson County, and newcomer Unicoi County. Hampton moved back down to Class 1A and Unicoi filled their spot.
The Rebels will compete in three separate holiday tournaments this year. They are back in the Hardee’s Classic at David Crockett and in the Big H BBQ Classic at Cherokee. They will travel to Florida the week after Christmas to compete in the Innisfree Classic in Pensacola.
