RUTLEDGE – It was the Caden Baugh and Carson Quillen show for the Greeneville Greene Devils Thursday night as they had little trouble dispatching Grainger in a 69-0 blowout.
Baugh accounted for four touchdowns as he threw for two and ran for two and finished the game with 136 yards on the ground and 83 through the air. Carson Quillen rolled up huge numbers as he ran for 126 yards and a pair of touchdowns, caught one pass for 34 yards which resulted in a score, and had 105 yards in punt returns. The Devils’ defense pitched its third shutout of the season.
“I feel like our guys are playing really hard right now,” Greeneville head coach Eddie Spradlen said of his team who has outscored their last two opponents 142-8. “We are being really physical with teams, we just have to be sure that stops when the whistle blows. We got some cheap penalties tonight but I can deal with that when you play hard.”
Spradlen was elated with the way his defense performed against the Grizzlies. “We put a lot of young guys in when Grainger had their starters in and we were able to keep them out of the end zone. We have to have some of those younger guys step in there and play some big roles for us. We have to continue to get better and better each week.”
It took only one play for the Greene Devils to start scoring as Baugh hit Quillen for a 34-yard touchdown. Baugh called his own number on the next score as he ran untouched for a 69-yarder. Quilllen scored his first rushing touchdown as he ran in from 48 yards away to give the visitors a 21-0 lead after the first quarter.
The first score of the second frame was a short three-yard run by Jeriah Griffin. Taren Claridy had a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown, Baugh scored on a 62-yard run and Quillen found the end zone once more, this time from 37 yards, as the Greene Devils padded their advantage to 49-0 at the break.
Griffin followed up his rushing touchdown with a receiving score to begin the third quarter as he ran past the Grizzly defenders on his way to a 49-yard touchdown. Zaydyn Anderson scored from the one to cap a drive that was set up by a fumble recovery by Hayden Moore. The final score of the night came when Colton Smith was on the receiving end of a 15-yard pass from Parker Quillen to make the final tally 69-0.
