On Sunday the Tennessee Sports Writers Association released its All-State football teams for Classes 4A, 5A, and 6A, and four Greeneville Greene Devils earned state-wide recognition.
Running back Carson Quillen, offensive lineman Brandon Iezzi, defensive back Zaydyn Anderson and linebacker Drew Armbrister were all recognized as being among the best players in the state of Tennessee.
Quillen, a star running back for the Greene Devils, had a prolific senior season in which he was named one of three finalists for Class 4A’s Mr. Football award. He was named Grassroots Media’s Offensive player of the year for the second time, and the TSWA named him to its All-State team for the third time.
Quillen wrapped up his senior campaign with 1,775 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns while averaging 9.9 yards per carry. He caught 13 passes for 218 yards with two more touchdowns. He finished the season with 2,383 all-purpose yards while helping the Greene Devils advance to the state quarterfinals. His best game was in the second round of the playoffs where he ran for 307 yards and scored five touchdowns against Gibbs.
Anderson was a standout two-way player for Greeneville who the TSWA selected to its All-State team as a defensive back. On Offense it was nearly impossible for opposing defenses to stay in front Anderson this season as the speedy receiver averaged 25.5 yards per catch. He had 28 receptions for 713 yards and 11 touchdowns in his junior season. Anderson finished the year with 963 all-purpose yards. On defense he had 20 tackles, four interceptions, seven pass breakups and one forced fumble. He returned two of those interceptions for touchdowns. Anderson was named the Region 1-4A Athlete of the Year.
Iezzi as a senior guard led the way for Greeneville’s dynamic rushing offense this season and for that he was named the Region 1-4A Offensive Lineman of the Year. Behind Iezzi’s push the Greene Devils ran for 3,222 yards in 13 games this season. On defense Iezzi had 32 tackles, seven tackles for loss, one sack and one fumble recovery.
Armbrister, a senior linebacker, was the leader of a Greeneville defensive unit that held opponents to just 211 yards and 10 points per game. For his effort he was named the Region 1-4A Defensive Player of the Year. He finished his senior campaign with 96 tackles, eight tackles for loss, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and two pass break ups.
The All-State teams for Class 1A, 2A, and 3A will be released on Monday.
