Greeneville High School announced on Wednesday morning that due to inadvertently playing an ineligible player in its August 23 game against Tennessee High that the Greene Devils are forfeiting that contest.
The ineligible player only played against Tennessee High according to a statement from the school and did not participate in Friday’s 35-0 win over Dobyns-Bennett. The game against Tennessee High had been a 54-7 victory.
The Greene Devils, who came in ranked as the No.2 team in Class 4A in the latest TSWA poll are now officially 1-1 on season.
According to the school’s statement it became aware of the possible eligibility issue on August 28 due to the team inadvertently omitting the student athlete’s eligibility paperwork to the TSSAA.
Greeneville self-reported the issue to the TSSAA and it was determined that due to the lack of satisfactory paperwork at the time of the Tennessee High game that the player was not eligible to play.
According to the school’s statement, as part of the self-reporting, a hardship application was submitted for the student athlete and has been approved as of September 3, making the player eligible going forward.
Mark Reeves the TSSAA executive director commended Greeneville High School on how this matter was handled.
