Greeneville and South Greene opened their middle school volleyball seasons with a match that felt more like a state championship than an opener. The two cross-town rivals traded momentum throughout the night, splitting the first two sets before the Lady Devils pulled out a 2-1 victory.
Greeneville claimed the opening set 25-21, but South Greene answered with a hard-fought 25-23 win in the second. Both coaches praised their teams’ efforts.
“As a first game, I could not ask for anything better,” Greeneville coach Beth Catron said. “We gave up a lot of unforced errors, but with only one returner, I am really happy with the way we played.”
South Greene coach Brittany Rednour echoed the pride in her team. “With it being the first game, I am extremely proud. We had some mental breakdowns with the noise, but overall we battled through and played hard until the end.”
In the decisive third set, Greeneville raced out to a 5-0 lead, but the Lady Rebels quickly responded with a run of their own. Neither team ever took full control, but the Lady Devils closed strong to secure the 15-12 win.
Greeneville’s Jaylee Thacker led the way with eight kills, while teammate Kyenne Wright added seven aces. With the victory, the Lady Devils start the season 1-0, while the Lady Rebels fall to 0-1. Both teams will look to build on the experience as the season moves forward.
