Greeneville Walks It Off 2-1 Behind Harmon’s Heroics

Greeneville and Sevier County, two programs with storied histories, treated fans at Dale Alexander Field to a classic Thursday night showdown filled with a playoff atmosphere.

Both teams battled from start to finish, and in the end the Greene Devils secured their 20th win of the season with a 2-1 walk-off victory.

Pitching dominated throughout, as both teams were limited to just four hits apiece. Greeneville was led offensively by senior Will Harmon, who went 3-for-4 with a double and two singles. His biggest hit came with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, when he took a two-strike pitch the opposite way for the game-winning hit.

“Honestly, it was a surprise moment,” an emotional Harmon said. “They intentionally walked Tegan (Begley) to get to me, and as soon as they did that, it put a fire in me to come through for my guys. He had thrown me two curveballs before that, and the third was the same pitch—he just left it up a little more, and I was ready to take it backside.”

Harmon contributed on the mound as well, combining with relievers Silar Lewis and Randen Fillers to keep Sevier County’s offense in check.

Harmon got the start and went five innings, allowing one run on four hits while walking two and striking out eight. Lewis entered in the sixth and recorded a strikeout, while Fillers worked the seventh, allowing one walk and striking out one to earn the win.

Benny Greene also turned in a strong performance for Sevier County, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out four and walking four, though he did not factor into the decision. Hayden Parrish took the loss despite allowing just one unearned run, finishing with three strikeouts and three walks in one inning.

Sevier County struck first in the third inning, as Landen Hurst drew a two-out walk, stole second, and scored on a Parrish double to give the Smoky Bears a 1-0 lead.

That score held until the sixth, when Greeneville finally broke through. Harmon led off the inning with a double into the right-field corner. His courtesy runner, Jack Lister, moved to third on a groundout by Sam Thompson and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.

In the top of the seventh, Fillers worked out of trouble after an error allowed a runner to reach second with two outs. He responded with a strikeout to end the inning and set the stage for the dramatic finish.

“I was just thinking about staying in the zone, staying focused, and not losing my head,” Fillers said. “It feels great. It was a big confidence builder, and it felt good to execute.”

Greeneville capitalized in the bottom half. Jaxon Winter reached on a misplayed slow roller down the third-base line and advanced to second, putting the winning run in scoring position. After two strikeouts, Sevier County intentionally walked Tegan Begley to set up a force play and face Harmon. The move initially paid off, as Harmon fell behind 0-2, but he responded by driving the next pitch to right field, scoring Winter for the walk-off win.

Greeneville will close out the week with four games in Knoxville over the next two days, facing Halls and Knox Central on Friday before taking on Heritage and Bearden on Saturday.
