GREENEVILLE, Tenn. — The Tusculum University women’s beach volleyball team has been seeded third at this weekend’s (Apr. 10-11) South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Championship, hosted at the Greeneville Beach Complex.
The tournament will be conducted using a three-team pool play, single round-robin format.
Carson-Newman is the league’s top seed with a perfect 10-0 record in conference and headlines Pool A, which also features No. 4 seed Wingate and No. 5 seed Catawba. Erskine is the No. 2 overall seed and tops the Pool B bracket, joined by No. 3 Tusculum and No. 6 Emmanuel.
Tusculum is 9-18 (6-4 SACC) this season, going 3-2 in conference play in April to take the No. 3 seed. The Pioneers have beaten Emmanuel, Wingate, and Catawba twice in conference play, losing to both Erskine and Carson-Newman two times. In non-conference action, Tusculum has downed Morehead State and Lynchburg (twice).
Head coach Emily Kalmink has assembled her lineup for the weekend, which has racked up a combined 35 wins this season.
At the top flight will be Hannah Marsh (Gulf Shores, Ala.) and Sofia Vega Barrantes (San José, Costa Rica). The pairing went 12-11 (7-3 SACC), including 10-11 as the 1’s. Marsh and Vega Barrantes have been partners since March 4 against Lynchburg. They have defeated Lynchburg, Emmanuel (twice), Erskine, Wingate (three times), Catawba, Eckerd, Florida Southern, Carson-Newman, and Division I Eastern Kentucky.
The 2’s will be Brynn Smith (Wellsburg, Iowa) and Sylvia Liszewski (Sarasota, Fla.). Together, the pair has gone 5-7 (4-2 SACC). The partnership began against Chattanooga for a single match but has been a constant feature in the lineup since March 21. Smith and Liszewski have defeated Florida Southern, along with a four-match conference sweep last weekend.
For the No. 3 flight, the Pioneers will send out Jordyn Anderson (Overland Park, Kan.) and Solene Roussel (Moëlan-sur-Mer, France). The pairing debuted on March 27 and has wins over Emmanuel and Catawba.
Cooper George (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Dasha Nikolaeva (Valencia, Spain) have been tabbed at the fourth slot. The duo’s lone win came against Division I Austin Peay on March 27.
The final flight will consist of Siri Aasgard (Ostereidet, Norway) and Ally Doty (Calgary, Alberta). This pairing has been together for the entirety of the season, except for one match, recording a 15-12 (8-2 SACC) mark. The freshmen started their collegiate careers with a 10-0 outset and have regained their momentum as of late, sweeping last weekend’s conference action. Outside of league work, Aasgard and Doty have defeated Liberty, Morehead State, Austin Peay (twice), Eastern Kentucky, and Lynchburg (twice).
All tournament matches will have live scoring, which can be found at http://tusculumstats.statbroadcast.com. Parking will be $10 per car (cash only), with primary parking for spectators at Greeneville Middle School. Limited tournament apparel will be available on site and will be cashless.
