Kobe Mundy moved to Greeneville as a freshman hoping to do big things on the baseball diamond. Entering his senior season he has already helped the Greene Devils win one state championship and advance to another state tournament.
On Tuesday he took another step in his athletic career by signing his letter of intent to join the baseball program at Tusculum University.
“It feels great to sign, I can’t describe it,” Mundy said. “I don’t like to make things about me, but when all these people show up for you it’s the best feeling. The thought of hanging up my cleats has never felt good to me. So, getting four more years is a really good feeling. I love baseball and I don’t want it to end.”
Mundy is not only excited to be playing college baseball, but he is excited that he gets to stay close to home to do it. While playing at Greeneville Mundy has spent plenty of time on the field at Pioneer Park and he thinks that will help his transition to the college game.
“Tusculum has the nicest field at that level. I have played there a lot in high school and it kind of already feels like a second home. The lights aren’t too bright, I feel good about plying in a bigger stadium already,” Mundy said.
Mundy has primarily played third base since joining the Greene Devils, but he feels like he has the ability to play a variety of spots at the college level and is willing to do whatever it takes to earn a spot in the lineup.
“I have no clue where they are going to play me,” Mundy said. “When I moved here I played outfield, and coach (Andy) Collins moved me to the infield. I feel like I can play anywhere and I’ll play wherever I can get on the field the fastest.”
Before he moves on to the college level Mundy still has plenty he wants to accomplish with the Greene Devils. That includes winning another state title and earning All-State recognition.
Tusculum is coming off a 26-26 season in 2024 and is led by Brandon Steele who is entering his seventh season as the team’s head coach. The Pioneers went 18-12 in South Atlantic Conference play and finished in fifth place in the league standings.
Mundy is not sure about what he wants to study at Tusculum yet.
