A major stride was taken on Friday afternoon to elevate athletics in Greene County.

Members of the Greene County School Board, Greene County Commission, representatives from Tusculum University, local school officials as well as athletes and coaches gathered at Doak Elementary School for a ground-breaking ceremony on a Track and Field Facility that will used by Greene County Schools and Tusculum University.

“This is exciting for our kids and our community. I’m thankful for the commission and school board for making this happen. This is something that has been needed for a long time. It’s a great opportunity for our teams. It allows us to host the regionals now, and to host collegiate meets, and that is great for our community. This is awesome and I’m really excited about it.”

The facility will be used by the track teams at Chuckey-Doak, South Greene, and West Greene, and the infield will be used by the new South Greene lacrosse team as well. All three track programs have produced state champions in recent years as well as dozens of state medalist, and now with their own state-of-the-art facility to use for the first time coaches are hopeful their programs, and the sport locally, can rise to new heights.

“Having a home will be awesome,” Case said. “We’re thankful that we have been able to use the facilities that we have through the years and for the people that have helped us out. But this will help our kids grow even more, and I think it will allow them to have a little more pride in the program. We’ve had state champions from all of our schools, and now we have a place to show them off. This county has had a great track and field past, and I think this will help us have a great future.”

The school board approved BurWil Construction of Bristol to complete the project that will be built on the field behind Doak Elementary  School and near the Tusculum City Park. The bid to build the facility is $5.6 million and it is expected to be completed by spring of 2027.
