North Greene entered Thanksgiving break with an undefeated 4-0 record by beating Washburn 51-23 on Tuesday night inside of Jerome Woolsey Gymnasium. The Lady Huskies were outstanding in the first quarter and held Washburn without a field goal and rode that hot start to the finish to leave the court happy with a win.
“Just an overall good night. We get a little break now for Thanksgiving, so I’m very happy with the outcome,” Head Coach James Buchanan stated.
Tralyn Southerland led the way with a game-high 14 points and Cadie McDevitt’s trio of triples helped her follow behind Southerland with 11 points.
Both players were a key reason in the Lady Huskies first quarter dominance and helped North Greene reach a 12-0 lead only three minutes into the game. Southerland started with a steal and a layup only seconds into the contest. McDevitt stole a pass next and scored five quick points with a tough layup and then a second-chance three. She drained a second three-point bucket next to go up 12-0. Washburn made a free throw with 4:46 remaining in the first.
Senior Ella Head landed a three and Eva Leonard sank a long two-point shot to end the first quarter leading 19-1.
North Greene fired off on all cylinders in the first, but slowed down in the final three quarters and outscored Washburn 32-22 in the remainder.
“We had a great first quarter. We scored 19 and the rest of the game just felt like we weren’t in much of a rhythm,” Buchanan mentioned.
He praised Washburn for their resilience and commented on the quality of their team. “People see a score and think, ‘well they can’t play’, you watch and see how many games they win this year. That’s a good team. That’s a quality team.”
Ebony Hill banked in a runner for Washburn’s first field goal with 4:04 left in the second quarter. North Greene led 21-4 before Head and Leonard each drained a triple before the half to send both teams into the break with North Greene on top 27-7.
Southerland turned the heat up in the third quarter and scored six of North Greene’s first eight points on a trio of layups. McDevitt landed her third and final three-point bomb to lead the Lady Huskies into the fourth leading 38-13.
Eva Leonard scored North Greene’s seventh three-point field goal to lead 43-17 and end the starters day on the hardwood. Kinlea Eastep led the fourth quarter charge with six points off the bench.
The Lady Huskies finished the afternoon with a 51-23 win over region rival Washburn to improve to 4-0 and as Coach James Buchanan says, “Turkey tastes better when you’re undefeated.”
Southerland scored 14, McDevitt scored 11, Leonard scored eight, and Head scored six.
North Greene will not participate in a Thanksgiving Tournament this season and will take the court next on Tuesday at Chuckey-Doak High School with a date against the Lady Black Knights.
