NEWPORT – The Chuckey-Doak volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on Monday night in Newport with sweeps of both Cocke County and South Greene in a tri-match.
“I was really proud of the girls,” Chuckey-Doak coach Marissa Snapp said. “We didn’t know what to expect from Cocke County, but I always tell my girls to play our game no matter what is on the other side. Then against South Greene it’s hard to play a team you’ve seen a lot, but we were able to finish the night strong.”
Chuckey-Doak 2, South Greene 0
The Lady Black Knights finished their evening with a hard-fought 2-0 win over South Greene, 25-22, 25-20.
The match started with Chuckey-Doak jumping in front 4-1 behind two slams from Jacey Taylor, but the Lady Rebels answered and after a block by Haylee Bird South Greene flipped the lead to 5-4.
Emma Padgett followed with a kill from the left side and with Ava Brobeck serving the Lady Rebels’ lead grew to 8-4.
A stretch of four consecutive errors by South Greene gave the lead back to Chuckey-Doak at 11-10. Two kills from Taylor and a sneaky tip from Addy Pruitt put the Lady Black Knights on top 15-11.
South Greene rallied again to knot things at 15-15 with Keasley Hankins landing an ace and Padgett putting down a slam from the left side.
Isabelle Karriker came alive for Chuckey-Doak and on three consecutive points she scored with two kills and a block.
South Greene closed the gap to 21-20 on an ace by Bailey Ricker, but Chuckey-Doak stayed in front to the finish. In the closing stretch of the 25-22 win Macy Church had an ace and Taylor added two more kills.
The second set started with three errors by Chuckey-Doak to give South Greene a 3-0 lead, but it was short lived. Carlene Bishop snuck a tip over the block to put the Lady Knights on top 5-4 and they played from in front the rest of the way.
South Greene made it a one-point game three times, twice on powerful kills from Padgett, but Chuckey-Doak answered every time.
“I’ve been telling the girls that we can’t worry about losing a point, we have to keep pushing,” Snapp said. “They did not make it easy on us, but to maintain that lead and pushing points every time we got the serve was huge.”
After Padgett put down a slam from the right side to narrow the margin to 17-15 Chuckey-Doak’s Jayden Myers scored on a kill, a block and a tip to grow the advantage to 20-15. Then after Pruitt kept the play alive with two tough digs the lead grew to 22-15 when Taylor pushed a ball deep to the back line.
Four errors allowed South Greene to pull within three at 23-20 before Karriker finished the match with a pair of blocks.
“It was good for us to get to see multiple teams in one day, but we didn’t come out with the energy I would like to see,” South Greene coach Stephen Gregg said. “We aren’t going to beat too many good teams trading points or trying to come from behind every set. We dug too many holes, and we have to start coming out stronger.”
South Greene 2, Cocke County 0
The night finished with South Greene taking down Cocke County 2-0, 25-16, 25-19.
The contest started with 10 ties to a 16-16 deadlock. Three bad swings by Cocke County put South Greene in front 19-16. Kortnei Bailey then landed a kill and Ricker put down an ace as the lead grew to 22-16.
The set finished with a tip by Bird and another slam from Bailey.
In the second set South Greene gained the first advantage at 8-5 after kills from Sadie Trammell and Padgett.
Seven of the next nine points were scored through errors, but South Greene did get a tip from Bailey and kill from Padget to go in front 13-10.
Padgett then pushed a ball to the back line before sending down a thundering slam from the middle to put the Lady Rebels in front 17-10.
In the closing stretch Bailey and Padgett each got one more kill a piece on the way to a 25-19 win.
Chuckey-Doak 2, Cocke County 0
The evening in Newport started with Chuckey-Doak taking down Cocke County 2-0, 25-14, 25-7.
Cocke County went in front first in the first set at 6-4 after Celeste McNealy and Hannah Fisher landed kills.
An ace by Church tied things at 7-7 and a right-side kill by Pruitt gave the Lady Black Knights the lead for good at 8-7.
Two aces by Pruitt stretched the lead to 17-10 and then Taylor slammed one from the left side before Karriker stuffed a Lady Red swing to make it 19-10.
Cocke County did not score another attacking point while Karricker added a tip, a block and a first-hit push in the 25-14 win.
Cocke County scored the first point of the second set, but then Taylor went on a remarkable run at the service line to put Chuckey-Doak in front 12-1. The run saw her land five aces while Karriker and Bishop each had kills.
“We’ve been working on her serve. We’ve been focusing on nice, flat contact and moving the ball around, not letting it go to the same person every time. She did a great job right there,” Snapp said.
A double hit by Chuckey-Doak broke the streak but then on consecutive plays Karriker, Myers and Madison Shelton landed kills for a 15-2 lead.
In the finishing stretch Karriker had three block and finished the 25-7 win by scoring on a tip.
