Lady Devils Breeze Past Hurricanes On Way To 9-0 Win

MORRISTOWN – The Greeneville soccer team passed with precision and fired from all angles on Thursday night as they turned the defense of the Morristown East Lady Hurricanes into a gentle breeze.

Six different Lady Greene Devils scored on Thursday and for a second time in the opening week of the season Greeneville collected a 9-0, mercy rule win.

“I’m really happy to see us carry the momentum from Tuesday night into tonight,” Greeneville coach Jerry Graham said. “I was really proud of the way the girls passed the ball to create goals for their teammates. It was nice to see goals from different players, whether it was outside or inside, and we had a few girls overlap. Obviously, you like to be able to score from all of those different positions, because that will make it harder for other teams to defend us throughout the year.”

The field at Burke-Toney Stadium is only 100 yards long and in the opening minutes the compact playing surface allowed East’s midfield to fall back on defense and pack the box.

Greeneville’s offense controlled the game early, but it took until the 15th for the first shot to stretch the back of the net. The play started with a corner kick from Kinsley Spradlen on the left side. The ball bounced back to Elaina Philbeck at the top of the box and she slipped a pass through traffic to Ava Daniel who pounded a 10-yard shot into the back of the net.

It did not take long for the lead to grow to 2-0. In the 19th minute Vivian Kammerdiener charged forward from the midfield and sent a pass ahead to Angelyn Diaz. Diaz used some give-and-go action with Peyton Vaught to get the defense to chase the ball to the left wing before she found a good look from the middle of the box.

In the 23rd minute Greeneville’s freshmen wings paired up to move the advantage to 3-0. It started with Spradlen stealing possession in front of the Lady Devils’ goal. The ball quickly bounced to Vaught who caught the defense on their heels when she launched a shot from the left side of the box inside the right post.

Still in the 23rd minute Vaught went back to work with a cross to Aliyah Johnson who pounded in a goal from the right post.

In the 28th minute Vaught got the action started again when she lobbed a corner kick into the box from the left side. The ball bounced back to Philbeck again. On the center back’s last offensive touch she set up Daniel for a goal, but this time she let a shot fly from the top of the box and pinned it inside the right post for a 5-0 lead.

Morristown East struggled to posses the ball through much of the first half as Greeneville midfielders Matea Gray, Diaz, Kammerdiener and Kenadee Harper kept the ball going toward the Lady Devils’ net.

The first time the Lady Hurricanes even got near the box came in the 31st minute but senior captain Marley VanBuskirk quickly cleared the threat. Morristown East only attempted one shot in the first half and only had one shot on frame in the entire contest.

“I can’t say enough about what  Matea, Angelyn and Viv are doing in the midfield. They are playing at a really high level right now early in the year,” Graham said. “It was nice to see the back line get involved and swing the ball around. Elaina and Marley did a great job of keeping the clean sheet. It was a pretty good outing.”

Greeneville scored again before the halftime break when Spradlen curled a corner kick in the 33rd minute that bounced off the keeper’s hand and into the net for a 6-0 lead.

Greeneville wasted little time extending its lead in the second half and in the 41st minute Kammerdiener set up Johnson for an open look from 15 yards that made the score 7-0.

Spradlen then sent a cross to Johnson in front of the frame two minutes later that allowed her to complete her hat trick.

The Lady Devils emptied the bench at that point, but still managed to end the game early. In the 67th minute Daniela Gallegos flew a corner kick into the box that Harper and Johnson took the first stabs at, but it was Vaught who found the right touch just feet from the goal line for her second goal of the day.

Greeneville has several new faces in the lineup this season, and on Thursday the young Lady Devils showed a lot of promise with seven of their nine goals coming from freshman and sophomores.

Johnson finished with three goals, Vaught had two goals and two assists, and Spradlen had a goal and two assists. Philbeck had a goal and an assist.

“Aliyah has the hat trick off the bench, which was tremendous and Peyton had the brace. We had some young girls perform at a high level on Tuesday, and it was nice to see them carry that into today. Peyton and Kinsley being disciplined on the outside and allowing us to keep our shape opened so much for us tonight,” Graham said.
