The Greeneville soccer team celebrated Senior Night in style Thursday with a dominant 9-0 win over Claiborne.
The victory not only capped the regular season on a high note for the seniors, but also marked several program milestones — their 101st consecutive conference win, 22nd straight regular-season conference championship, and Coach Jerry Graham’s 100th career victory.
“We have grown leaps and bounds as the season has gone along, and tonight was a great way to wrap up the regular season,” said Graham, whose team has battled through numerous injuries by shifting players across multiple positions.
Starting five freshmen, Greeneville wasted no time striking. In the fifth minute, Elaina Philbeck fed Kinsley Spradlen for the opening goal. Sixteen minutes later, Spradlen returned the favor, setting up Philbeck for a 2-0 lead.
The offense kept rolling. In the 22nd minute, Peyton Vaught scored from a tough angle, and just two minutes later Angelyn Diaz buried a shot from 20 yards out to make it 4-0. By the 30th minute, Matea Gray added her name to the scoresheet, finishing a pass from Marley VanBuskirk for a 5-0 halftime advantage.
Greeneville, which outshot Claiborne 31-0, continued the onslaught in the second half. Spradlen netted her second goal in the 47th minute, followed by another unassisted strike from Diaz in the 51st. Lorelei Birdwell extended the lead to 8-0 off a pass from Spradlen, and Gray sealed the win with her second goal in the 69th minute.
“It’s impressive,” praised Graham. “We surveyed the situation very well tonight and were able to score from many different options.”
With the win, the Lady Devils finish the regular season 8-7-1 and will enter the district tournament as the No. 1 seed after a few days of rest and recovery.
