Following a rainy Thursday across East Tennessee, Greeneville’s Lady Devil soccer team reigned supreme at Burley Stadium with a 3-0 victory over Elizabethton.
“We’re happy to get back in the win column,” said head coach Jerry Graham. “We’ve had some struggles with injuries and moving girls into different roles, so it was nice to be back home and pick up a win.”
The Lady Devils, who finished the night with 17 shots on goal, set the tone early. In the sixth minute Kinsley Spradlen sliced through the Lady Cyclone defense and ripped a shot past the keeper to make it 1-0.
“That goal was big for a couple of reasons,” Graham said. “It gave our team confidence and helped Kinsley get back in the scoring column.”
Greeneville nearly doubled the lead late in the first half when Peyton Vaught found the back of the net, but the goal was erased by an offsides call, keeping the score 1-0 at the break.
The second half brought more pressure from the Lady Devils. In the 47th minute Vaught delivered a perfect cross to Spradlen, who buried her second goal of the night for a 2-0 advantage.
In the 69th minute, Vaught was fouled from behind while attempting a shot and calmly converted the penalty kick to secure the 3-0 final.
Graham credited his defensive unit of Daniella Gallegos, Marley VanBuskirk, Kenadee Harper, Elaina Philbeck, and Cailee Broyles, for preserving the clean sheet and creating a number of possessions near midfield.
“We created a lot of opportunities tonight, but unfortunately didn’t finish as many as we could have,” Graham noted. “We’ll get back to work in practice and keep improving.”
Greeneville returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Grainger at Fox Field.
