In a match that was played near even for much of the night the Greeneville volleyball team figured out a way to finish strong and earn a 3-1 win at Chuckey-Doak on Thursday night, 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 25-14.
“I feel like the girls played with a lot of intention and purpose today,” Greeneville coach Sara Aiken said. “We knew that coming into this gym and playing a good Chuckey-Doak program was going to be a tough challenge. It’s a big deal to get a district win and these girls owned it tonight and made sure they left no doubt.”
The win on the road moves Greeneville’s District 1-AA record to 4-0 and keeps the Lady Devils on top of the league standings.
After miscues late in the third set allowed Chuckey-Doak to turn the momentum in its favor Greeneville refocused and took control of the fourth set to finish strong.
That started with the Lady Devils jumping in front 4-0 with Leah Ford serving. The stretch included a back-row kill from Ford. Three errors from Chuckey-Doak pushed the lead to 8-2.
Chuckey-Doak was able to close the gap to 10-7 after Chloe Kirkpatrick scored on a quick dump and Macy Church landed an ace.
Natalie Knight got the Lady Devils going again by scoring on a tip and then Manning Click went to the service line and stretched the lead to 16-7.
Ford landed two kills and Brylee Tullock snuck a tip over Lady Knights’ block as the lead grew to 20-11.
In the closing stretch Greeneville’s Aubree Honeycutt scored with a big block from the middle, Brynlee Jones had an ace and Kinley McCaslin came up with a kill from the left side.
“I thought the fourth set was very mature from our girls,” Aiken said. “Our bench and on-court players were all very much into making sure we did what we needed to do. That was big coming off a loss in the third set where we made a lot of errors. That is the maturity that we have been working on.”
The day started with a tightly contested first set that Chuckey-Doak led early, before Greeneville rallied to a 25-22 win.
Chuckey-Doak’s lead reached 11-5 after Addy Pruitt sent a kill down the length of the net and Jacey Taylor tricked the defense with a tip. Chuckey-Doak took its biggest lead of the night at 15-7 when Isabelle Karricker came up with a punishing block from the middle.
To that point Greeneville struggled hitting around the Lady Knights’ block but back-to-back kills by Ford seemed to breathe life into the Lady Devils.
Ford then went to the service line and put down three aces to even the score at 16-16.
“I thought Leah was monster. I heard her asking the ball, and for a young player to want the ball that much, was monster like,” Aiken said.
Greeneville took its first lead of the day at 18-17 on an errant kill attempt by Chuckey-Doak. The Lady Devils regained the lead for good at 20-19 before the set finished with kills from Ford, Knight and McCaslin, and a block from Honeycutt.
The second set went back and forth early, but an error gave the Lady Devils a 7-6 lead and two aces from McCaslin stretched the advantage to 10-6. An ace by Click and a right-side kill from Knight pushed the lead to 14-8.
Two Kills by Taylor closed the gap to 15-12 but Chuckey-Doak could not get any closer.
Ford restarted Greeneville’s run with a powerful kill from the left side and the Lady Devils went on to take a 25-17 win.
In the third set the Lady Black Knights went in front at 5-3 when Taylor and Jayden Myers came up with back-to-back kills.
Chuckey-Doak played from in front the rest of the way with the exception of a brief tie at 14-14 when Greeneville’s Julia Woolsey pushed a ball deep to the back line.
Greeneville’s Tullock and Gabby Atchison each scored on tips to make it a one-point game, but the Lady Devils could not get in front.
In the closing stretch Taylor landed a pair of kills while Karricker had a kill and a block in the Lady Black Knights’ 25-18 win.
Taylor led Chuckey-Doak on Thursday with 13 kills. Ford had 11 kills and four aces for Greeneville.
