Greeneville used a “never give up” attitude and gutted out a 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-23, 26-24) win over Chuckey-Doak on Senior Night to take first place in the District 1-AA standings.

“It feels super good. It feels super good to win anytime, but it feels really good to win on senior night, working hard for those seniors, but also just to be back in that win column feels good for our program,” Lady Devils Head Coach Sara Aiken mentioned.

It’s always bittersweet when it’s Senior Night. The Greene Devil faithful packed the bleachers at Greeneville High and made it a raucous atmosphere on Tuesday night. Chuckey-Doak posed a difficult challenge for the Lady Devils. They held a half-game lead over Greeneville coming into the contest. Greeneville had to fight and claw for every point and had to erase a deficit in all three sets they won.

“I don’t think you could script it any better. Just the battle of this game. When it’s a battle it is just energy filled, it’s exciting, the environment is electric, and you just couldn’t ask for any more from seniors who put in so much time,” Coach Aiken stated.

Manning Click, Kayla Thornburg, Brynlee Jones, Emma Shelton, and Brylee Tullock were honored as Greeneville’s five seniors.

Greeneville improved to 7-2 against District 1-AA competition and Chuckey-Doak fell to 6-2 and are tied with 6-2 Elizabethton for second place. Greeneville snapped a five-game losing streak in the process.

Chuckey-Doak took the first set 25-19 and quickly put Greeneville in a position they’d come to be familiar with all night. Greeneville led 8-7 at one point, but trailed the rest of the way and dropped the first set.

Greeneville rallied from behind to flip the numbers on the scoreboard and won the second set 25-19 to tie the match 1-1. A pair of back-to-back aces from senior Brynlee Jones vaulted them ahead from an early deficit. Brylee Tullock and Kinley McCaslin provided huge kills down the stretch to help aid their win.

Chuckey-Doak jumped ahead early in the third set with kills from Belle Karriker, Jacey Taylor, and Hayleigh Seidl. The Lady Knights found their biggest lead at 16-12 before Coach Aiken called a timeout to settle things down.

Greeneville trailed 21-17 until it strung together four-straight points to tie the set in the late stages. McCaslin came through with two-straight kills to force a Chuckey-Doak timeout. Jones delivered an ace from service and Brylee Tullock’s kill tied it at 21-21.

Natalie Knight’s accuracy was on point and proved beneficial in clutch moments. Her back corner kill tied the game at 23-23. Chuckey-Doak put a shot into the net and gave Greeneville the chance to put it away with the match point. Willow Aiken delivered in the clutch and served up an ace to end the third set with a 25-23 win in Greeneville’s favor.

The fourth set came down to the wire and was only decided by two points again. Chuckey-Doak gained the early advantage again with kills from Taylor, Jayden Myers, and Carlene Bishop.

Brylee Tullock and Emma Shelton helped Greeneville stay close with back-to-back kills each. Chloe Kirkpatrick delivered an ace for Chuckey-Doak as it led 16-13 and Coach Aiken called a timeout down 17-13.

Karriker put the Lady Knights ahead by five with three-straight Chuckey-Doak points.  Greeneville scored six of the next seven rallies and tied the score 21-21.

Knight and Shelton paired up for a big block at the net and Tullock claimed a kill next. She set herself up on the service line and delivered an ace next. Her next ace put Greeneville ahead 22-21 and gave the Lady Greene Devils their first lead of the set.

The set was tied 24-24 before Greeneville locked in and scored the two biggest points of the night to end the match. A service error by Chuckey-Doak gave Jones a chance to end it herself. The senior ended her Senior Night with an ace that gave Greeneville a 26-24 win and ended the match with a 3-1 victory.

“I liked the fight. It was such a good fight from our girls. Coming from behind every set and not just behind, but four and five points behind is not an easy hole to dig out of,” Coach Aiken ended with.

Greeneville hosts Unicoi County on Thursday for another District 1-2A contest. Chuckey-Doak will host Elizabethton at home on Thursday for an important District 1-2A matchup.

@GreeneDevilVB gained a HUGE win on Senior Night to not only send the seniors off their home court with a win, but to create a 3-way tie atop the District 1-2A standings with the 3-1 win over Chuckey-Doak. Hear what Head Coach Sara Aiken had to say after a big win pic.twitter.com/WVAY7L27Yy
