North Greene flipped the match’s momentum at the midway point, but South Greene closed strong on Tuesday night to pick up an important District 1-A win on Senior Night.

The Lady Rebels prevailed 3-2 in five sets, 25-13, 25-16, 19-25, 21-25, 15-17 to stay one game behind West Greene in the district standings.

“I was impressed with how we started the first two sets, we have been working on the lineup, and I feel like things are starting to come together,” South Greene coach Stephen Gregg said. “It was good to see the energy and excitement tonight. It showed in the first two sets, but North Greene took the momentum in the third and fourth sets. Then to come back and win 15-7 in the fifth was pretty impressive. Now I’m glad we can get back to practice and start working on some things, because it feels like it’s been months since we have had a couple of days of practice.”

The Lady Huskies stole all of the momentum late and forced a fifth set, but South Greene was able to regroup when it mattered most and ended the night with a 15-7 victory.

The final set started with Emma Padgett slamming kills from the middle and left side for the first lead at 2-1. She added two more kills to give the Lady Huskies a little breathing room at 6-3.

In sets three and four North Greene’s defense was able to keep Padgett in check by skillfully covering the floor, but in the fifth set she found a little extra bounce and a little more power. Padgett ended up landing a kill on eight of South Greene’s 15 points in the final set.

“I’ve been resting some of the girls and not playing them the full rotation, and I think for Emma that gave her a chance to sit down and refocus. Those girls probably never want to come out, but that showed some growth tonight. And she really stepped up late,” Gregg said.

Sadie Trammell snuck a dump over the Lady Huskies’ front line to make it 9-5, and Kortnei Bailey landed a kill to make it 10-6. Padgett slammed down a kill on the final three points of the night as South Greene collected the 15-7 win.

“Hats off to North Greene, they played gritty when a lot of teams might have laid down,” Gregg said. “But I’m proud of my team for staying loose and playing like a team. They are excited for each other and they stayed confident in the fifth set.”

The night started with a first set in which South Greene was in complete control.

Behind three aces from Bailey and two kills from Padgett the Lady Rebels took a quick 6-1 lead. That lead moved to 9-2 when Whitney Reaves slammed a kill from the left side.

South Greene’s lead continued to grow and after Bailey came up with a block and Padgett dropped in an ace the Lady Rebels were in front 17-5.

In the closing stretch South Greene mostly took advantage of North Greene errors on the way to a 25-13 win.

In the second set with Matti Phillips serving North Greene took the first lead at 5-0. North Greene stayed in front to 8-3 when Chloe Keys got an ace to fall between the defense.

That is where Bailey came alive and kept the Lady Huskies guessing at the net. Mixing pushes, tips and hard swing she closed the gap to 8-7. Bailey then slammed a ball from the left side to knot the score at 9-9, and Reaves dropped in an ace to put South Greene in front 10-9.

Bailey stayed active with a sneaky push followed by a powerful slam and the Lady Rebels’ lead increased to 16-10.

North Greene got kills from Kallie Dobson, Josie Graham and Cadie McDevitt, but it could not put a dent in South Greene’s lead as the Lady Rebels went in front 2-0 with a 25-16 lead.

“We need to stop digging holes, but hats off to Kortnei for getting us back in that one. That was big early in the match. I tell them all the time its about how you finish, but I would rather no have to play catch up there,” Gregg said.

In the third set North Greene’s defense began to figure things out and swings from Padgett and Bailey fell with less frequency.

On offense Graham got going for the Lady Huskies and after she slammed the ball three times North Greene was in front 7-3.

Reaves got South Greene going with a kill and after Bailey scored with a tip the set was tied at 7-7.

From there the teams traded points until Graham came up with two more big swing that put North Greene in front 15-11. Errors by South Greene allowed that lead to grow to 18-11.

An ace by Reagan Arrowood closed the gap to 18-14, but South Greene could not get any closer. In the closing stretch North Greene got kills from McDevitt and Phillips on the way to a 25-19 win.

South Greene was in control in the early portion of the fourth set with Padgett lading a trio of big swings on the way to a 7-3 lead.

North Greene fought back and when Phillips pushed a ball to the back line the Lady Rebels’ lead was down to 11-10.

Tralyn Southerland came up with a block that tied things at 16-16. Then Dobson came up with a good run from the middle in which she scored on a tip, a kill and a block to put the Lady Huskies in front 20-17.

Graham kept swinging hard and added two more kills in the closing stretch as North Greene won the set 25-21.
