West Greene and Cosby squared off in a non-conference matchup Friday evening at Jimmy Jones Gymnasium, officially bringing the Christmas break to a close. The Lady Eagles capitalized on missed shots and turnovers, converting them into transition baskets on their way to a 56–38 victory.
West Greene got on the scoreboard first with a jumper from Joie Shipley, but Cosby quickly answered with an early run to take an 8–2 lead. Payton Norton scored five points in the opening quarter, followed by four from Erica Davis, as the Lady Buffaloes trailed 17–11 at the end of the first period.
The Lady Eagles opened the second quarter with four straight points before Sarah Justis knocked down a running layup to cut the deficit to 21–13 with 6:19 remaining in the half. Unfortunately for the home team, the visitors from Cocke County responded with a decisive 9–0 run, extending their lead to 30–13 heading into the locker room.
West Greene began the third quarter with a Shipley free throw and a Justis jumper, trimming the margin to 30–16 just 55 seconds into the period. Cosby quickly regained momentum, however, using a 7–0 run before Shipley answered with a layup at the 5:27 mark to make it 37–18.
Cosby followed with another 8–0 run to push the lead to 45–18 before Fillers sparked West Greene with a scoring surge, pouring in 10 points to help keep the Lady Buffaloes within striking distance.
Trailing 48–28 entering the final period, West Greene outscored Cosby 10–8 over the final eight minutes to close out the scoring.
West Greene was led by Norton with 18 points and Shipley with 12, while Cosby’s Spurgeon led all scorers with 20 points.
