ROGERSVILLE – Two old foes, the South Greene Lady Rebels and West Greene Lady Buffaloes, clashed in the semifinals at the Big H BBQ Christmas Bash held at Cherokee High School on Friday night.
The Lady Rebels controlled the contest the who way and picked up a 55-36 win.
The Lady Buffs got on the scoreboard first with a pair of free throws by Payton Norton. Norton then got a steal on the defensive end of the court and turned it into two points. After an empty Lady Reb possession Joie Shipley was good from down low and the Lady Buffs were up 6-0 early in the first quarter.
At that point the Lady Rebels kept their composure and outscored the Lady Buffs taking a 15-6 lead by the end of the first quarter. South Greene was led by Kortnei Bailey’s six points and big triple by Reagan Arrowood.
Arrowood had the hot hand to open the second quarter with a layup off the glass and another triple from the right elbow for a 20-6 lead, and a 20-0 run over two quarters.
Emily Justis finally stopped the bleeding with a three from the key. Norton sank a baseline jumper, but Ari Hoese kept pace with a triple from the elbow for South Greene. Paisley Brobeck dropped two from the line and Hoese was one of two at the stripe. Then as the quarter was winding down Norton popped a deep triple from the logo but the Lady rebels took a 33-16 halftime lead.
The bucket seamed to have a lid on it for the Lady Buffaloes as the third quarter started with eight consecutive empty possessions, while the Lady Rebels were adding to their lead. Bailey and Hoese played a little give-and-go with Bailey scoring on the layup. Hoese sank a short jumper and Bailey scored on a fast break for a 40-16 lead.
The Lady Buffs made a late push when Emily Justis scored in the paint as did Norton. Norton drilled a three from the top of the key and Justis followed with a nearly identical shot to cut into the lead and the the Lady Buffs kept the window open for a comeback with the third quarter score of 41-26.
The Lady Rebels kept the pressure up on defense early in the fourth quarter to shut down the Lady Buffs offense. Neveah Davis made a pair from the line and a layup from in front. With the Lady Buffs struggling to score Brobeck followed with a layup in transition and Bailey did the same, closing any window of opportunity for the Lady Buffs.
The Lady Rebels advance to Saturday’s championship game where they will take on Cherokee at 6 p.m. West Greene will meet Cloudland in the third place game at 3 p.m.
Bailey led the Lady Rebels with 18 and Arrowood contributed with 10. Norton scored a game high 20 points for West Greene.
South Greene head coach Stephen Gregg later said “Every team is different, every match up is different, and I thought the girls really bought in and we’re still trying to learn our true rotation. That was a huge key tonight the girls came in and were sparked. I can’t brag on them enough, it definitely helped our confidence tonight.”
