ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The Tusculum University men’s golf team carded an opening round 303 and are tied for ninth place at the 2024 South Atlantic Conference Championship. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the Orangeburg Country Club and hosted by Newberry College.
There is a logjam atop the team leaderboard with just two strokes separating the top-five. Lenoir-Rhyne and Coker are tied for first at 288, Wingate is third with 289 while Anderson and Carson-Newman are tied for fourth at 290. Lincoln Memorial is sixth with 295 followed by Newberry (298), Newberry (301), Tusculum (303), Catawba (303), UVA Wise (326), Emory & Henry (336) and Mars Hill (344).
Coker’s Caleb Tidd shot a two-under par 68 and has the first round lead. Anderson’s Simon Wright is the only other player to shoot in red numbers as he is in second place with a one-under par 69.
Tusculum senior Dominic Barron Holden is five shots out of the lead after his opening 73 which puts him in a six-way tie for 14th place. Sophomore Cole Haygood is tied for 27th after his 75 and senior Blake Williams posted a 77 and is tied for 36th. Freshman Morgan Cain shot 78 and is in 41st place while senior Isak Holter carded an 82 and is tied for 53rd.
Monday’s second round will begin with tee times scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. on the par-70, 7,032-yard layout. The Pioneers will be paired with UVA Wise with their tee times running from 9:20 – 10:00 a.m.
