With a new-look roster and new coach the Chuckey-Doak girls basketball team got the season started on Thursday by taking down the Kingsport Area Christian Home Education Association 60-29.
“I thought we played extremely well tonight, especially in the second half,” Chuckey-Doak coach Tanner Earley said. “I think there were some nerves early tonight. But once we settled down I thought we played really hard. We are young team with very little varsity experience, and it was good to see them grow as the game went on.”
The Lady Black Knights got the night started by running the floor to create transition opportunities while playing tough defense on the other end of the court. Chuckey-Doak’s defense was so effective that KACHEA did not make a field goal for the first 7:28 of game play.
On offense two buckets by Carlene Bishop had the Lady Knights quickly claiming a 6-0 lead. Carlene Bishop then set up her sister Cristen Bishop for a pair of layups that pushed the advantage to 12-1.
Carlene Bishop led all scorers on Thursday with 21 points, but she did more than score. She was one of the team’s top rebounders with eight, and she led the fast break she continually, setting up her teammates for scoring opportunities.
“Carlene did a lot of things well tonight,” Earley said. “She played point some, she played wing some. She drove the lane, she looked for her shot. She played aggressive and that’s what I really liked.”
KACHEA’s Mikie Johnson was able to sink a triple late in the first period to close the gap to 18-6.
In the second quarter Jayden Myers drove the baseline for a layup that put Chuckey-Doak in front 26-12. Carlene Bishop made it 29-13 when she ran past all of the Lady Wildcats for a coast-to-coast lay in.
Chuckey-Doak led 29-15 at halftime.
Chuckey-Doak continued to play tough defense in the second half and Bishop provided six consecutive points on the offensive end to push the lead to 36-19.
A steal by Carlene Bishop led to an easy bucket for Cristen Bishop, and then Myers scored on an inbound play to push the advantage to 42-21.
KACHEA scored the final five points of the third quarter to close the gap to 42-26.
In the fourth quarter Chuckey-Doak continued to roll and quickly put the game out of reach. The Lady Black Knights scored 14 unanswered points in the first four minutes of the period. Carlene Bishop and Myers each scored five points while Chloe Kirkpatrick had four.
Anna Franklin broke the streak with a triple, but it was too little too late for the Lady Wildcats.
Myers was also in double figures for Chuckey-Doak with 13 points. Kirkpatrick had nine points and Cristen Bishop scored eight. Hayleigh Seidl finished with nine rebounds.
For KACHEA Johnson scored 14 points.
Thursday’s win was the first for Earley as the lady Black Knights’ coach, and the first of his high-school coaching career.
“The nerves were there for me tonight in my first game as a high school coach. It feels good to get that first one out of the way. But its not about me, the girls did everything. I’m really proud of them,” Earley said.
