The North Greene football team went to Jellico on Friday without starting quarterback and team captain Thomas Darnell available. That meant someone had to step up and play a bigger role, and Brandon Weems did just that as he helped the Huskies to a thrilling 19-14 win. For that he has been named the Greene Sports Zone Player of the Week.
The senior receiver was the go-to target for Jared Swatzell in the sophomore’s first ever start. Weems had seven catches for 101 yards. He also spent time in the backfield as a wildcat quarterback and ran for 34 yards and a touchdown. Filling in as the Huskies’ punter he had a 60-yard boot. On defense Weems had an interception and helped hold the Blue Devils to 14 points. He was also in on the Huskies’ last-second, goal-line stand that sealed the victory.
