Rebels Finish On Top Of Overtime Clash At North Greene

The North Greene and South Greene boys basketball teams went back and forth all night long, and in regulation the game stayed within two possessions for all but 33 seconds.

Then in overtime on Saturday the Rebels took control and captured a 61-56 win on the road over their cross-county rivals.

“I don’t know what it is about this place. I’ve had some really good team come in here and it feels like I either get my hind end kicked or I sneak out a win,” South Greene coach Terry Hoese said. “I’m happy to get a win tonight. We played a lot better defensively.  We’ve been reeling a little this week this and it feels good to get a win.”

The Rebels went into the fourth quarter trailing 33-31, but Noah Wright quickly corrected that with a pair of put-back buckets. With 3:52 left to play Wright made a pair of free throws to give South Greene its biggest lead at 45-37.

Wright scored eight in the fourth quarter and made some of the Rebels’ most important defensive plays late in the game on Saturday.

“Noah played great tonight. At the end I stuck him in a diamond and one on (Tyler) Britton and he locked him down,” Hoese said. “He is tough. If that kid was 6’5” he’s be looking at some major colleges. He’s 6’1” and plays so much bigger. He doesn’t like to lose.”

North Greene refused to go down easy and closed strong over the final three minutes of regulation. Thomas Darnell got things started when he powered in a layup and turned it into three points. Then with 1:32 left to play Jaiden Bailey sank a pair of free throws to even the score at 47-47.

South Greene regained the lead when Jameson White found Gavin Dyer cutting to the basket. After a steal by Lucas Couch Wright made one at the foul line to stretch the lead to 50-47.

With 17 seconds on the clock North Greene’s Tyler Britton shook off his defender and stepped into a three-pointer from the left wing that tied things once more at 50-50. On the Rebels’ last chance Darnell met Dyer in the paint for a block that extended the game.

“We battled down the stretch and fought our way to force overtime. I’ve told these guys that we can beat any team on our schedule. But in order to be successful we have to learn from our mistakes. We’ve had several close games that haven’t gone our way. We’re right there, but we haven’t made plays to win and that is kind of frustrating,” North Greene coach Matt Weems said.

For 13 seconds in overtime North Greene led after Darnell scored three the hard way, but going the other way Couch took a high-low feed from Wright and put the Rebels in front to the finish.

Dyer scored four points in the closing stretch to secure the 61-56 win for the Rebels.

Saturday started with a back-and-forth opening frame in which Couch went inside for six points for the Rebels, but as the clock struck zero Darnell landed a triple from the corner to give North Greene a 14-11 lead.

South Greene took the lead with 2:37 left in the second quarter when White stole the ball and set up Couch for a breakaway layup.

Couch had one of the best nights of his South Greene career and led all scorers on Saturday with 19 points on Saturday.

“Lucas was huge tonight,” Hoese said. “The majority of that was getting to the free throw line or scoring on cuts to the bucket. He’s an athlete and is capable of that every night. If we can get him going like that consistently it will make us a ton better.”

Just before the game went to halftime Britton found Jaiden Bailey open on the right wing for a three-pointer that put North Greene in front 27-26.

The margin did not change much in the third quarter as the teams combined for just 11 points.

South Greene’s Cayden Fillers went strong to the hoop with 1:12 left to even the score at 31-31.

With five seconds left North Greene went back in front at 33-31 when Britton rolled in a runner from the right side.

In addition to 19 points from Couch Dyer scored 14 points for South Greene and Wright added 10.

Darnell led North Greene with 17 points while Britton had 16 and Bailey 12.
