ELIZABETHTON – South Greene’s hot shooting was on display again on Thursday night as the Rebels traveled to Elizabethton and handed Happy Valley a 65-43 loss in conference play.
“It’s good. We’re at that time of year everybody’s sick. He had some players out, we’ve got some kids sick, so we came up here and played well and it feels good. We’re not at full strength and he’s not at full strength so it doesn’t really tell the true story, but they’re good,” South Greene’s Head Coach Terry Hoese stated.
The Rebels hit eight triples and had three players touch double figures in Thursday’s dominant win. Like the girls before South Greene led wire-to-wire in a runaway win. It’s always good to get a conference win, but also important to grab one on the road.
South Greene improved to 14-9 overall and 4-3 within District 1-2A play.
Gavin Dyer sank five three-pointers and led all scorers with a game-high 21 points. Cayden Fillers and Jameson White joined him in double figures with 13 each.
“Offensively we played really well. Gavin had 21, and Cayden had 13, and Jameson had 13 so when you get three players in double figures it’s always good,” Coach Hoese stated.
Like a parallel from the girls’ game, Gavin Dyer led the team in scoring and started the game’s scoring with a three-point bomb to open up. The Rebels raced out to a 12-4 lead with layups from Noah Wright and Cayden Fillers and a three-pointer from Jameson White. Dyer made another trifecta and White completed an and-one play to end the quarter. South Greene led 20-10 eight minutes in.
“We’re not a very good starting team so it’s good for us to come out and get going in the first quarter,” Hoese stated.
Happy Valley began the second quarter on a 4-0 run and cut it to six before Coach Hoese called a timeout. Charlie Lane attacked the paint for a driving layup and Will Arrowood scored on a second-chance layup to extend the lead to its largest margin at twelve. After Happy Valley began on a 4-0 run, they went cold as ice and didn’t score again in the first half. The Rebels ended the half on a 13-0 run. To no one’s surprise Gavin Dyer hit a three at the end of the half to lead the Rebels into the break leading 33-14.
The Rebels remained hot in the early part of the third quarter and started on a 20-6 run. Jameson White and Gavin Dyer controlled the pace with five points each. Cayden Fillers and Simon Burns used the glass for layups and Dyer ended the run with yet another three-point bomb. Happy Valley went on a small 10-2 run at the end of the quarter. South Greene went into the fourth in full control and led 55-30.
The starters exited with 6:01 left and the bench mob helped take it home. Eli Fillers scored a late three-point bucket off the bench.
South Greene rolled out of Happy Valley with a 65-43 win on Thursday night.
“Hats off to them. They came out and played with what they had and played pretty well. If they would’ve made some outside shots early it would’ve been a different game. Happy to come up here and get a win though,” Coach Hoese explained.
Gavin Dyer led all scorers with a game-high 21 points. Cayden Fillers and Jameson White joined him in double figures with 13 each. Mason Townsend scored 11 to lead Happy Valley.
The Rebels are currently scheduled to play Chuckey-Doak next on Tuesday in Lower Afton.
