North Greene fought through a limited roster due to injuries and sickness, but had no issue getting past University High with a 69-19 victory on Tuesday night.
“Real proud of the kids for stepping up and some of them had to take on different roles tonight and some of them had to play more minutes than usual and maybe a different position all together. I was very proud of them and we just kept it really simple tonight and I felt like they were looking for the exact right things,” Head Coach James Buchanan expressed.
The Lady Huskies were down two players due to injuries and one due to sickness and played one fighting through a previous injury. Two starters were missing, but North Greene still had a successful night, winning their first conference game of the season. The Lady Huskies got everybody involved with all eight players adding their names to the scorebook.
Tralyn Southerland led all scorers with a game-high 22 points for North Greene in only three quarters. Eva Leonard scored 14 points and sank four three-pointers. Natalie Foshie scored 11 to reach double figures.
North Greene improved to 16-3 with Tuesday’s win. The Lady Huskies evened their District 1-1A record to 1-1.
Southerland, the game’s leading scorer, started the scoring. She made the first of two free throws and Natalie Foshie followed her miss and scored a layup to lead 3-0 in the first minute. The Lady Huskies never trailed in the win after striking first. The third and final double-digit scorer, Eva Leonard, scored five-straight to ease into an 8-0 lead.
The lead grew to 13-0 before University scored. Josie Graham’s put back and Leonard’s second three helped grow the lead. Harper Poston scored the Lady Bucs first points with a three-pointer with 3:30 left in the first. Leonard came right back with her third triple of the opening quarter and Foshie nailed a three before the buzzer sounded to end the first leading 25-8.
Sophomore Cadie McDevitt played minutes off the bench after sustaining a minor injury in last Tuesday’s win over Cosby. Her shot didn’t look like it was affected at all as she sank her first attempt with a three from beyond the arc.
“It was good to have Cadie back. She was very limited, but not only did she come back but she was able to knock down a shot and knock some of that rust off. We’re gonna need her moving forward,” Coach Buchanan said.
Leonard and Foshie each sank another three in the second quarter as Southerland reached double figures by the half with nine in the frame and fourteen at the half. North Greene led 43-14 at the break.
Southerland kept dominating with a layup to begin the second half. Addi Dean started in place of an injured Ella Head and scored a layup in the third quarter. Southerland’s and-one kept them moving forward and made it 50-14. Maggie Ryder made University’s first bucket of the quarter with a three at the 2:17 mark. Veronika Abrosikov buried a three with thirty seconds left to end the third with North Greene on top 58-17.
The Lady Huskies would roll on through the fourth quarter with the running clock in effect and outscored University 11-2. Satine Johnson scored four in the fourth.
North Greene finished the game with a wire-to-wire, 69-19 win.
The Lady Huskies return to action on Friday with another District 1-1A contest with Unaka.
