South Greene 22, Providence 0

South Greene Middle started out the season the best way possible with a 22-0 shutout over Providence on Thursday night.

The offense was clicking on all cylinders and the defense pitched a shutout. Head Coach Tony Schroeck was pleased with the effort and results from Thursday’s win.

“Feeling very confident. Our offense did what they needed to do. We need to do a better job at taking care of the ball, but the defense stood up when the offense didn’t do too well. I’m very proud of the overall team effort,” Coach Schroeck said.

Wyatt Milhorn was a one-man wrecking crew and finished with a trio of touchdowns for the Rebels. His huge night powered South Greene to a 1-0 start to the season.

“He’s just our workhorse. We just try to give him the ball and good things happen. He helps us on offense and defense and he’s just such a good team leader. Love having him on the team,” Coach Schroeck stated.

He scored his first in the first half and helped South Greene hold an 8-0 lead at halftime.

Exiting the break South Greene received the second half kickoff, but fumbled on the first play of the drive. Providence turned the ball over on downs and the Rebels went back to work.

Milhorn picked up every yard of the ensuing drive and found the end zone again for his second touchdown. The two-point try failed and the score was 14-0.

Another turnover on downs by Providence gave South Greene another short field to work with. Milhorn put the final stamp on his terrific night with his third and final touchdown. The two-point try was successful and set the score at 22-0.

Alex Merriam showed off his athleticism with an over-the-shoulder interception in the fourth. Jaxon Plemmons came away with an interception with 1:10 left and sealed the win. South Greene defeated Providence 22-0.

Wyatt Milhorn led the Rebels on both sides with 21 carries for 148 yards and 3 touchdowns. He had 4 tackles and 2 sacks on defense. Michael Parris led them in tackles with 5 and had a sack to go with them. The Rebels collected 200 total yards of offense.

It travels to play Rogersville City next Thursday at 6:00.

Bulls Gap 20, North Greene 6

North Greene Middle battled in Bulls Gap, but came up short and lost 20-6 on Thursday.

Self-inflicted penalties hurt the Huskies. A pair of holding calls in the first half set them back and wiped a touchdown off the board. Bulls Gap capitalized on that and scored first following the negated touchdown.

North Greene trailed 8-0 at the break.

Archer Tippins cut the score to 8-6 with a touchdown for the Huskies, but trouble followed. Bulls Gap immediately responded with a kickoff return touchdown to go ahead 14-6.

North Greene couldn’t find the end zone anymore after that. Bulls Gap scored once more with 25 seconds left to set the score at 20-6.

The Huskies dropped their season opener to Bulls Gap and host Surgoinsville Middle next Thursday night at 6:00.
