The Greeneville Middle School Lady Devil soccer team took to the pitch for the second time this week — and for the second straight game, they recorded a shutout, defeating Kingsport 1-0.
Greeneville coach Rustin Jones praised his team’s performance.
“Playing against a squad made up of two schools the caliber of John Sevier and Ross Robinson doesn’t seem quite fair on paper,” Jones said. “But our girls put together a total team effort and took care of business.”
The Lady Devils controlled nearly every aspect of the match, outshooting their opponent 13-1 overall and 7-1 on goal. The only thing they couldn’t control was the weather. The contest began with a lightning delay before the teams finally took the field and battled to a scoreless first half through the rain.
The breakthrough came in the 36th minute, when Andrehina Moreno’s shot found the back of the net. it was the only goal Greeneville would need. Kingsport’s lone shot of the game came late, but goalkeeper Leia Alexander preserved the shutout with a key save.
Greeneville improves to 2-0 on the young season and will travel to Chuckey-Doak on Monday for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
