JONESBOROUGH – South Greene had a successful run through the Hardee’s Classic last week taking home their third-straight championship, but in a return to Jonesborough on Tuesday it couldn’t rekindle the same success and suffered a 61-41 loss to David Crockett.
It was an up-and-down game for the Rebels. A four-point second quarter and a three-point fourth quarter didn’t mix well with a 22-point third quarter. The Rebels looked like the same team from last week at times, but struggled at other times. South Greene’s third quarter featured Gavin Dyer scoring all 13 of his points to lead the Rebels. Eight different Rebels scored, but Dyer was the only to reach double figures.
Crockett caught fire on their home floor and canned 11 three-point shots and made seven of those in the first half. When they weren’t catching fire from beyond the arc they were bullying in the paint and scoring on high quality looks.
When asked about his thoughts on the game Rebels Head Coach Terry Hoese simply put it, “It’s my fault. We weren’t prepared to play. That’s it.”
The first quarter was tightly contested and saw South Greene stay neck-and-neck, but a banked three-point bomb at the buzzer by Caleb Eaves ended the first with Crockett ahead 18-12.
Cayden Fillers started the second with a layup underneath, but Crockett would soon go on a 9-0 run and finish the quarter on a 13-4 run. It wasn’t one specific player or a duo of scorers, but instead a whole committee. Five different players scored exactly one field goal and made up for the 13 second-quarter points.
“I don’t know if we took many shots inside of 25 feet. Threw it all over the place. We had a bunch of turnovers, took terrible shots, and didn’t rebound,” Coach Hoese spoke about the second quarter.
Crockett led 31-16 at the break.
South Greene had a fruitful third quarter and the lid seemed to come off the rim. Gavin Dyer heated up and scored two layups, Cayden Fillers added a layup, and Lucas Couch made a tough fadeaway.
But Crockett penetrated inside and scored enough to keep South Greene in the rearview mirror.
Dyer’s next three cut it to 40-30, Noah Wright’s layup cut it to 30-42, and Dyer’s last three cut it to seven at 42-35. Unfortunately, that’s as close as South Greene could get. Nolan Street traded triples with Couch before the quarter ended. The Rebels still trailed 47-38.
The lid seemed to go back over the rim in the fourth quarter. The Rebels scored one field goal early in the quarter courtesy of Jameson White and it would be the only field goal scored in the entire quarter. The game slipped away quicker than anybody expected and resulted in a lopsided final.
South Greene left David Crockett High School with a 61-41 loss.
“You can’t come out and put up a first half like we did and expect to win. Crockett can play. We got beat by a good team,” Coach Hoese stated.
Gavin Dyer was their leading scorer with 13 points. Caleb Eaves led Crockett with 19 points to lead all scorers.
South Greene hits the road again and visits Grainger on Friday night.
