On Tuesday afternoon the TSSAA Board of Control voted unanimously to sanction Girls Flag Football as a State Championship sport.
It will be played in the spring semester starting in the 2025-26 calendar year.
It joins lacrosse as the newest sanctioned sport in the state. Lacrosse was sanctioned in January 2023.
Girls Flag Football began in Williamson County in 2022 with the help of the Tennessee Titans. The Metro Nashville and Montgomery County school systems followed suit.
The board proposed the sport be split into two classes with the traditional 16 regions. The legislative council did not vote on classifications at Tuesday’s meeting.
