West Greene walked into enemy territory and opened up District 1-2A play with a 53-29 win at Chuckey-Doak on Tuesday night.
“It feels good. A lot of girls were able to contribute tonight, so it feels good to win and start the district 1-0,” Lady Buffs Head Coach Betsy Shaw said.
The Lady Buffaloes are no stranger to wins in Lower Afton. The win marks West Greene’s third-straight at Chuckey-Doak High School over their arch rival. The other two were single-digit nail biters, but West Greene delivered a 24-point statement win on Tuesday to gain a leg up on the rest of their conference opponents by starting their District 1-2A schedule 1-0.
Three different players entered double figures for West Greene. Payton Norton led the Lady Buffs with 13 points while Emily Justis and Joie Shipley scored 12 each. Seven different players scored in total. Jayden Myers led Chuckey-Doak with 13 points.
West Greene shot 44.6 percent from the field and held Chuckey-Doak to 21.9 percent on their home floor.
West Greene reaches a .500 record with the win and improved to 4-4 (1-0). Chuckey-Doak fell to 1-4 (0-1) with the loss.
The Lady Buffs started hot from the floor and led from start to finish, never trailing for a single second. Shipley scored the first four points and Justis splashed a deep three-point shot to give West Greene an 8-0 lead minutes in.
Chloe Kirkpatrick killed the run with two points for Chuckey-Doak. Neveah Fillers netted a transition jumper and Norton banked one off the glass to keep the motor running and helped West Greene hold a 14-4 lead after one quarter of action.
West Greene stretched its lead out to 15 points at 19-4 before Jayden Myers went deep from beyond the perimeter. The three pointers were flying in the second period with Justis downing one next.
Carlene Bishop drained a triple to cut the deficit to a dozen and Myers completed an and-one play to reach a single-digit deficit, but Norton sprayed away from long range and Sarah Justus banked a layup at the buzzer to increase West Greene’s lead to 29-15 at the break.
The Lady Black Knights showed some promise in the early stages of the third quarter and scored six-straight to make the score 29-21. West Greene was held without a field goal for over six minutes until Justis got a runner to fall. The offense made up for lost time and scored ten points in the final two minutes. The biggest run of the game happened when Norton drained back-to-back three-point buckets and Madison Wagner made a layup to cap an 8-0 run.
“It’s a game of runs. It really is and they had some runs and so did we. It’s just a game of runs. Payton did a good job. She got her feet set and it shifted the momentum back towards us,” Shaw stated.
Coach Shaw spoke about the importance of holding that lead going into the fourth. “It’s an away game and you don’t want to let it slip away. We about did right there during that third quarter. We stopped executing what we were trying to do. We had people step up and played better as a team. We started off great and kind of dropped off right there in the third quarter.”
West Greene led 42-26 heading into the fourth.
They never slowed down after catching fire at the end of the third. Justis hit a three to give them their biggest lead of the game at 45-28. The Lady Buffs finished the fourth on an 8-1 run and kept Chuckey-Doak off the scoreboard for the most part, only allowing three points in the fourth.
West Greene claimed a 53-29 win to start District 1-2A play 1-0.
The Lady Buffs return back home to welcome another county rival to Jimmy Jones Gymnasium. The South Greene Rebels come to Mosheim on Friday night in a battle of two of Tuesday night’s winners. The winner will hold the No. 1 spot heading into Christmas.
The Lady Knights travel to Elizabethton to play Happy Valley on Friday night.
