The West Greene Lady Buffaloes hosted the Cocke County Lady Red to begin the week on Monday night and started the week off with an impressive sweep (25-13, 25-13, 25-15) in front of the home crowd.
“I was very pleased. I thought they did a great job. They just really worked together well tonight. A lot of team work and energy on the bench. They had great attitudes and just overall performance, I thought they played very well together which I know they can, so it’s very fun to see and fun to watch,” Lady Buffs Head Coach Raven Borie expressed.
It was a fairly dominant performance from West Greene. The Lady Buffs never trailed much all night and never found themselves in any trouble in any of the three sets. The wealth was shared on offense with everybody getting a share of the glory while the defense stopped Cocke County’s attack with ease.
West Greene improved to 3-0 after the win.
The Lady Buffs wasted no time pouring it on on offense. Madi Evans stepped to the line and delivered three aces to help West Greene pull out to a 6-1 lead. Kahlie Edwards was next to serve an ace and West Greene led 11-5 and forced the Lady Red to call timeout.
The timeout didn’t do Cocke County any favors and instead helped West Greene. Edwards came out of it and delivered back-to-back aces for three in-a-row. The lead grew to 13-5. The lead grew even larger with Deborah Julian’s kill to make it 21-8. Cocke County made West Greene earn the rest of the set by winning five-straight before the Lady Buffs finally put it away.
Aleea Aiken provided a kill and an ace to help West Greene take the first set 25-13.
Madi Evans helped start the second set off with another ace quickly followed by another kill and ace from Aiken. Journey Lamons introduced herself with a kill and Aiken served up another ace to jump out to a 7-1 lead.
West Greene allowed Cocke County to pull within two and cut it to 9-7. Coach Borie called a timeout to talk things over with the girls and smooth things out.
“I just told them like hey we’re good just take a breath. We were making mistakes and it wasn’t anything they were doing on their end it was just us. It kind of got a little chaotic. Just breathe, we got it, let’s go, and so they regrouped and went out there and made it work,” Coach Borie explained.
The timeout certainly helped and the Lady Buffs won 16 of the final 22 on the way to winning the second set. Carleigh Williams and Madi Evans sent two more aces flying over the net to make it 19-11. Journey Lamons and Morgan Moody helped finish the set with a combined three kills for another 25-13 set win.
The Lady Buffs led 2-0 in search of the sweep.
The third set was close in the beginning with neither team gaining much of an edge over the other. Aiken and Williams gained back-to-back kills to tie it 5-5. Julian’s kill broke an 8-8 tie and sparked a 4-0 run for West Greene. Another huge run helped West Greene pull away. The Lady Buffs won seven-straight and held a 21-10 lead late. Moody tallied a kill and Evans tallied two more aces in the run.
West Greene finished off the set with a kill from Aiken and completed the sweep with a 25-15 win in the third set.
The Lady Buffs improved to 3-0 and travel to Claiborne next on Thursday night for a matchup with the Lady Bulldogs.
