West Greene traveled to face North Greene and walked out of Baileyton with a 3-1 win (22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-16) to remain unbeaten against District 1-1A competitors.
“It’s always good to win, obviously since it’s a conference game and a competitive county game like that,” West Greene Head Coach Raven Borie said.
The Lady Buffs started slow and dropped a close first set, but figured things out and strung together strong offensive runs to help build large leads that North Greene couldn’t overcome. The win helps West Greene get to 6-0 in District 1-1A and keep their unblemished record going. “We’ve got into a habit. I think we’re starting to like to lose the first set and then decide to play after. I’m not really sure why, so we have to figure that out,” Coach Borie mentioned.
Coach Borie likes the way her team is playing at the moment, but knows the season is far from over with tough opponents down the stretch. “I said it before. We still have some really good competition with North Greene and South Greene. I know we still have South Greene next week and North Greene we’ll see one, if not both of them, again. It’s good to click, but it’s not good to get too comfortable,” she mentioned.
West Greene started the first set with an ace courtesy of Baylee Lowe. The score stayed close through the early stages and neither team could pull away. Kinlea Eastep gained an early kill followed by a kill from Aleea Aiken on the opposite side of the court. Josie Graham swayed the ball to North Greene’s side with a kill, but a dominant stretch from Cassidy Hill saw West Greene go ahead 5-3 with a kill and an ace from the senior.
North Greene grabbed the lead with an ace from Chloe Keys and a kill from Graham to cap off a run of four-straight from the Lady Huskies. Addy Peters tied it 7-7 with a block and kill and back-to-back aces from Aiken sent West Greene ahead 9-7. Journey Lamons was automatic from the service line and delivered three-straight aces to go up 13-9.
North Greene Head Coach Emaline Erwin decided to call a timeout and discuss the gameplan and it worked in the long run. West Greene grew their lead to 17-11, but three-straight from North Greene forced Coach Borie to call a timeout next.
Josie Graham provided a pair of kills and Tralyn Southerland joined her by helping to bring their deficit to only one. After another West Greene timeout, they managed to tie it 19-19. Cadie McDevitt’s block above the net handed them a 21-20 lead. A momentum-changing kill by Kallie Dobson helped give North Greene the push they needed to go ahead 23-21 and escape with the first set. North Greene won the first set 25-22.
West Greene’s offense started clicking and carried out a win in the second set. Cassidy Hill immediately set the pace with a kill and Aleea Aiken and Journey Lamons followed with kills to create a 5-1 advantage. Aubree Everett collected two-straight aces to bump the lead to 8-1.
North Greene won five of the next eight, but West Greene scored five-straight to pull ahead 16-6. Journey Lamons started with a kill and was aided by a block from Addy Peters and a kill by Morgan Moody. Aiken ended the run with an ace.
The Lady Huskies strung together three-straight before Peters delivered a crushing spike and led 19-11. Coach Borie didn’t like what she saw and called a timeout to talk things over. “My frustration was because they were just getting down on themselves. They’re gonna make mistakes and I preach that over and over. And so when I see them just get really down and let other team’s build momentum off their mistakes it’s very frustrating,” Coach Borie stated.
North Greene threatened to come back by winning five-straight and pulled within three at 21-18. Deborah Julian’s kill in the late stages made it 23-18 and set up Hill & Lamons with the chance to end it with back-to-back kills. West Greene tied the match 1-1 with a 25-19 win.
They carried the momentum from the second set over to the third set and quickly claimed a 5-0 lead. Braelynn Willis and Cassidy Hill collected kills and Baylee Lowe sent an ace flying over the net. Hill’s outstretched arms blocked a spike attempt by the Lady Huskies. Matti Phillips ended the run with a kill.
North Greene cut the margin to only one, but the Lady Buffs dominated the middle portion of the set and won 10-straight volleys. Journey Lamons started it with a kill and Aleea Aiken, Cassidy Hill, and Addy Peters added kills during the run. Hill was key from the service line and delivered three aces in a span of four serves. North Greene ended the run, but Peters made sure not to let them creep closer with a pair of kills. The Lady Huskies did manage to make it interesting winning nine of twelve towards the end, but West Greene relied on Cassidy Hill’s big plays down the stretch to lead them to a 25-15 victory in the third set.
The fourth set was a copy and paste of the third set and saw West Greene pull out to a quick 7-2 lead with kills from Aleea Aiken and Cassidy Hill. Josie Graham landed a big spike to cut the deficit to 8-4, but a kill from Journey Lamons and back-to-back kills from Addy Peters lifted West Greene to a 12-5 advantage. Morgan Moody got in on the scoring and was credited with a pair of kills and extended the lead to 17-9.
A timeout was called by Coach Erwin and worked for the time being as Graham and Matti Phillips delivered a kill and an ace. They cut it to 18-13 before West Greene started running away. Cassidy Hill scored three kills in West Greene’s final seven points. Addy Peters and Journey Lamons delivered a kill each in the back end of the set. West Greene won the fourth and final set 25-16 to claim the 3-1 win.
West Greene plays Elizabethton next on Saturday at 11:00 AM. North Greene matches up with Tennessee High next on Saturday at 9:00 AM.
