ROGERSVILLE – The West Greene Buffaloes brought a third-place trophy back to Mosheim after defeating a familiar foe in the South Greene Rebels 59-51 at Big H BBQ Christmas Bash at Cherokee High School on Saturday night.

West Greene Head Coach Allen Tolliver said after the game “We are real happy with it (the third place finish), I talked to (South Greene coach Terry) Hoese before the game and we decided to treat it like a scrimmage. We play each other enough during the regular season, we were just playing and having a good time out there really.”

Tolliver and Hoese might have decided to play it like a scrimmage but the forgot to tell the players, particularly Tytus Shelton of West Greene and Zack Mason of South Greene. These two put on an offensive show, Shelton with a career and game high 23 points and Mason keeping the Rebels close with five three-pointers.

With the starters in the Buffs were up 7-2 and Elijah Williams buried a triple from the elbow that caused Hoese to call time out and change out all five players. Tolliver quickly followed with an exchange of personnel. Mason came off the bench and drilled a pair of triples from the elbow, but the Buffs stayed hot to finish out the first quarter up 11 at 21-10.

In the second quarter Mason sparked the Rebels again with two more threes and Noah Wright scored seven off the bench to help South Greene pull within four at the half at 31-27.

Shelton opened the third quarter with corner three and scored nine in the period.  The Buffaloes pulled further ahead, 11 at one point, until Cayden Fillers scored from in front to cut the lead to single digits to nine at 45-36.

Shelton extended the Buffalo lead back to double digits early in the fourth quarter to 55-44 when Williams hit him in stride for an easy layup at the three-minute mark. Carter Stills hit a layup and Luck Heck finished the scoring for the Buffs. The Rebels made a few free throw down the stretch but it wasn’t enough to overcome the lead and West Greene walked away with the third-place finish.

Davis hit a short jumper in the lane, Sarah Justis had a putback and a layup in transition. Shipley was good from in front and Davis then drilled a triple from the elbow. Payton Norton had a putback to bring the score to 31-18 with 1:15 remaining in the first half. The half would end with that score, but the Lady Buffs had trimmed once was a 22 point down to 13 at the half.
