At times on Tuesday night it seemed like the South Greene boys could do no wrong as they blew by North Greene on the way to a 75-41 win.
The Rebels got everyone involved and kept the energy and intensity high all night in the true team effort.
“This was a really good win. I felt like we set the tone early with the intensity and built a lead quickly,” South Greene coach Terry Hoese said. “We put some pressure on them and took away some of the things they like to do on the offensive end. After last night’s loss I didn’t know how we would come out, but overall I felt like we played really well. These guys proved to me that they want to win basketball games.”
The Rebels scored the first eight points on Tuesday with Jameson White needing just five seconds to knock down a three-pointer. Gavin Dyer finished the outburst with a three-pointer from the left wing.
North Greene got triples from Isaac Gaby and Tyler Britton to close the gap to 8-6.
A block by Cayden Fillers on one end of the floor set up White for a breakaway layup and then White knocked down another corner three as South Greene went to the second quarter leading 15-10.
White was on fire for the Rebels and he finished with a game-high 19 points while also adding a pesky presence at the top of the Rebels’ defensive formation.
“Everybody played well, but Jameson had a huge game,” Hoese said. “He is capable of doing that. I expect a lot out of him. He can shoot the ball and make passes that other people can’t make. He may lack some size, but he makes up for that with effort. He got us going and that opened up things for other guys.”
In the second quarter South Greene interior presence began to take over with Noah Wright, Lucas Couch and Fillers shutting down the paint.
Wright added six points on the offensive end while an offensive rebound by Fillers set up Dyer for a triple. Will Arrowood sank a three-pointer as the Rebels lead grew to 29-14.
At the same time North Greene went six minutes between made field goals and only scored six points in the second quarter.
Couch scored four points in the final 1:11 and South Greene went to halftime leading 33-16.
North Greene scored the first points of the second half, a pair of free throws from Gaby, but then things began to unravel.
South Greene reeled off 21 straight points over a span of 3:58. Wright started that with three points the old-fashioned way before a loose-ball scramble finished with White running away for a lay in.
White hit from beyond the arc twice in the stretch while Dyer and Arrowood each got one triple to fall as the lead grew to 57-20.
South Greene went to the fourth quarter leading 61-27.
In the fourth quarter the Rebels’ bench took over and the Huskies were able to close the gap to 66-41. Gaby scored seven points in the stretch and Jaiden Bailey added five points.
The Rebels finished the night with a 75-41 win.
In addition to White’s 19 points Wright scored 13 points for the Rebels. Of the 11 players South Greene put on the floor on Tuesday 10 of them scored.
For North Greene Britton scored 14 points, Gaby had 12 and Thomas Darnell put in 10 points.
