Greeneville and West Ridge went the distance Monday evening, battling through five sets before the Wolves stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to claim a 3-2 victory in volleyball action.
The Lady Devils opened strong, never trailing in the first set on their way to a 25-15 win. Kinley McCaslin and Leah Ford sparked the attack, with McCaslin tallying four kills and Ford adding one, giving Greeneville the offensive push they needed early.
Set two began with West Ridge jumping out to a 5-2 lead, but the Lady Devils clawed back to even things at 7-7. With Ford serving, Greeneville surged ahead 10-7 and maintained their edge with key kills from Ford and Natalie Knight. Behind their steady attack, the Lady Devils closed out the set 25-20 and seized a commanding 2-0 lead.
“I was really proud of how diversified our attacking was,” said Coach Sarah Aiken. “That, along with getting several touches on defense, gave our young team the opportunity to come out fast and be successful.”
Momentum appeared to stay with Greeneville in the third set as they built a 14-10 lead thanks to two aces from Brynlee Jones and another from Allison Hayes. But the Wolves responded with an 8-0 run to take an 18-14 advantage. Greeneville rallied to tie the set at 21-21 and had the sweep within reach, but West Ridge closed on a 4-0 run to take the set 25-21.
“West Ridge made some adjustments in the third set and we just didn’t quite catch up,” Aiken said. “I am proud of the grit and determination that our young team played with, and hopefully this helps us find some confidence within ourselves.”
The fourth set was tightly contested. Greeneville jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but neither side could pull away. McCaslin, who finished with a team high twelve kills, kept the Lady Devils within striking distance, but West Ridge broke free from a 19-19 tie to win 25-20 and force a decisive fifth set.
The Wolves carried all the momentum into the final frame. After trailing 4-2, they strung together a decisive run and powered to a 15-6 victory, completing the reverse sweep.
The Lady Devils (10-7, 6-0) will need to regroup quickly. They’ll hit the road on Tuesday for a key conference showdown at Elizabethton against the Cyclones.
