Greeneville 11 – Johnson City 1 (7-innings)
The Greeneville Flyboys have endured their share of highs and lows this summer, but on Wednesday night they embraced the role of spoiler.
Johnson City entered the contest needing either a victory or an Elizabethton loss to secure the Appalachian League’s second and final playoff berth. Instead, the Flyboys sent their home fans away happy, cruising to an 11-1 mercy-rule victory on Fan Appreciation Night while setting the stage for a dramatic final day of the regular season to determine the last postseason spot.
Matt Cash gave those in attendance a performance they will not soon forget, accomplishing a feat that few baseball fans ever witness. The Jacksonville State junior played all nine defensive positions during the seven-inning contest, beginning the night behind the plate before rotating through the infield and outfield and finishing the game on the mound.
Cash also starred offensively, going 2-for-2 with a double, a single, an RBI, and two runs scored. Gabe Gray drove in three runs with a pair of singles, while Nolan Behm added two singles and an RBI to pace the Flyboys’ 10-hit attack.
Greeneville turned to Dylan Kirksey to cool off a Johnson City offense that had erupted for 16 runs less than 24 hours earlier. The Coppin State senior was outstanding, allowing just two hits over five scoreless innings to earn the victory. Kirksey struck out three and walked two in the dominant outing.
Matthew Kerrigan followed with a scoreless sixth inning, striking out one and walking one. Cash then took the mound to close out the game, allowing one run while issuing three walks.
The Flyboys, now 20-25 on the season, will wrap up the regular season Thursday night with a trip to Johnson City. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.
