MONROE, N.C. — The Tusculum University men’s golf team carded a 36-hole score of 571 and is in second place after day one of the Ralph Hargett Memorial Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being hosted by Wingate and held at the par-72, 6,818-yard Rolling Hills Country Club.
Tusculum opened with a 284 (-4) and followed with 287 (-1) and are 11 shots out of the lead currently held by Grand Valley State (282-278=560), who is the fourth-ranked team in the nation.
The Pioneers have three players listed in the top-10 individually led by freshman Morgan Cain who finished the day with a three-under par total 70-71=141 and is tied for fourth place. Blake Williams (70-72=142) and Cole Haygood (73-69=142) are locked in a tie for seventh place, while Dominic Barron Holden is tied for 20th with 71-75=146. Isak Holter rounds out the scoring for the Pioneers with his 75-84-159 (T82nd).
Host Wingate is in third place with 579, while Carson-Newman (580) and Belmont Abbey (585) round out the top-five. Lenoir-Rhyne is sixth with 586, followed by Indiana, Pa. (591), USC Beaufort (593), Hillsdale (593), North Greenville (595), Fayetteville State (597), Catawba (597), Wingate B (601), Belmont Abbey B (609), Post (613), Emmanuel (616), Wilmington (617) and Southern New Hampshire (629).
The Grand Valley players hold the top three individual spots with Drew Coble holding the 36-hole lead with 67-70=137 (-7). Laker teammates Manuel Cue and Nick Krueger are three shots behind at 140 as the GVSU duo is tied for second place.
The final round will be held on Tuesday.
