CHURCH HILL – During the regular season the Greeneville boys basketball team proved to be the class of District 2-3A with no opponent able to stay with 24 points of them. That continued into the postseason and on Tuesday at Volunteer High School the Greene Devils used another lopsided win to claim the district championship, 74-37 over Grainger.
“I think there is a standard, and it begins and ends with the kids,” said Greeneville head coach Brad Woolsey. “We’re really just all about our kids, and that’s the end of the story. We want to give our kids the opportunity and an environment in which they can excel both on the floor and off the floor. I think if you can create that environment—when you have good parents, when you have a good community, and when you have good kids—you see some good things sustained. And I think ultimately that’s what you see is kind of a combination of multiple things that lead to success.”
The game opened with unexpected struggles for the Greene Devils. They misfired on their first 10 field goal attempts, falling behind 9-2 to Grainger. However, any early concerns were short-lived. Greeneville roared back with a 10-0 run to close the first quarter, seizing a 12-9 advantage heading into the second.
“We had a couple of kids hit some big shots that loosened us up a little bit when we were a little bit tight,” Woolsey said of the sluggish start.
From that point forward, it was all Greeneville.
The second quarter saw the Greene Devils asserted total control. A suffocating defense, combined with relentless rebounding, fueled a dominant stretch that buried Grainger before halftime. Greeneville opened the period on a 15-4 run, relentlessly attacking the glass and converting second-chance opportunities.
By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, the Greene Devils had strung together a staggering 22-1 run, entering the locker room with a commanding 34-14 lead.
Greeneville’s momentum carried into the third quarter, ensuring there would be no comeback bid from the Grizzlies.
“Defensively, we gave up some looks early, and then after that we really settled in on defense. I feel like our defense helped us a little offensively,” said Woolsey.
For the first four minutes of the second half, Grainger managed to keep pace. But after a timeout from Woolsey, the Greene Devils slammed the door shut. A thunderous one-handed tomahawk dunk from 6-foot-8 junior Trey Thompson ignited a 6-0 surge, deflating any hopes of a Grainger rally.
Thompson was dominant on both ends of the floor, showcasing his ability to score inside and out. Late in the third quarter, he found another gear, imposing his will alongside Yordan Mills, who provided key contributions in the paint. Mills fueled another 6-0 run, scoring four points and assisting Thompson on a basket that all but secured the victory.
With more than six minutes remaining in the game, Woolsey turned to his bench, giving his starters a well-earned rest while allowing the reserves to close out the championship effort. The Greeneville bench held firm, preventing any late surge from the Grizzlies and even extending the lead.
When the final buzzer sounded, Greeneville had completed a dominant 64-37 victory, securing yet another District 2-3A title in emphatic fashion.
Thompson led the way with a game-high 23 points, while Mills and Isaac McGill each added seven.
For Grainger, Carter Williams was the lone bright spot, finishing with 14 points.
With the district championship in hand, Greeneville now turns its attention to the Region 1-3A Tournament. The Greene Devils will host the Elizabethton on Friday night at Hal Henard Gymnasium, where they’ll look to take another step toward the state tournament.
