Brewer Hits Draw Control Record And Milestone At UVA Wise

WISE, Va. — The University of Virginia at Wise defeated Tusculum University 13-7 in South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse Wednesday afternoon at Carl Smith Stadium.

Noley Hiller led the Cavaliers (9-7, 6-4 SAC) with four goals and Caitlyn Schultz had two goals and three assists as UVA Wise outshot Tusculum by a 40-19 margin. The Pioneers were charged with 33 turnovers, 25 of which were caused by the Cavaliers’ defense.

Kylie Marek, Cassidy Bourne and Lucy Brewer each scored two goals and Zuza Stasiak added one for the Pioneers (5-11, 3-7 SAC). Brewer had seven draw controls to set a program single-season record with 81, while becoming the third player in program history to reach 200 career draw controls, at 203.

The teams were tied 6-6 midway through the third quarter, but the Cavaliers scored seven of the final eight goals to pull away. Schultz had two goals and two assists for UVA Wise during the run, which was broken only by a goal from Marek with 2:30 left in the third quarter.

Tusculum opened the scoring with 9:18 left in the first quarter on a goal from Brewer, but Hiller scored twice in a three-minute span to give UVA Wise a 2-1 lead after one period. Goals from Stasiak and Brewer sandwiched a tally from Trimble as the teams were tied 3-3 with 9:06 to go in the first half. After UVA Wise scored three straight in a stretch of three minutes, Marek scored with 3:31 left in the half to bring Tusculum within 6-4 at halftime.

Bourne scored two goals in 1 minute, 11 seconds to tie the game at 6-6 with 13:26 left in the third quarter, but a goal from Leslie Clay with 7:39 remaining in the third gave UVA Wise the lead for good.

In addition to her seven draw controls, Brewer finished with a team-high five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Jessie Carolin-Vandenberg had four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Mackenzie Sherrod picked up three ground balls and had a caused turnovers.

Stoffelen had five draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Cavaliers, while Logen Davis had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Fifteen different players for UVA Wise had at least one caused turnover in the match.

Tusculum was just 13-for-27 on clears in the match, while UVA Wise was 16-for-23 on clears. UVA Wise had a 34-22 edge in ground balls, and the Cavaliers held the advantage in draw controls by a 13-10 margin.

Emily White finished with 19 saves in goal for the Pioneers, three short of her career high and tied for the second-most in a game in program history. Olivia Toomer finished with eight saves in goal for UVA Wise.
