Cain Finishes Fifth, Pioneers Ninth At Saint Leo Invite

DADE CITY, Fla. — The Tusculum University men’s golf team carded an even par 864 at the Saint Leo Invitational. The two-day event was held at the par 72, 7,054-yard Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.

The Pioneers tally included a second round 290 followed by a six-under par 282 in the final round as Tusculum finished tied for ninth place in the 20-team field. TU’s 864 is the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history.

TU freshman Morgan Cain finished tied for fifth place with his seven-under par score of 209 including a five-under 67 in Tuesday’s final round. His 209 is tied for the sixth-lowest 54-hole score in program history.

Tournament host Saint Leo led wire-to-wire with a 31-under par score of 833 to win by 15 shots over runner-up Keiser University (848). Barry and Nova Southeastern tied for third place honors with 850, followed by Valdosta State (857), Florida Southern (858), Lee University (861), Tampa (863), Tusculum (864) and Montevallo (864) to comprise the top-10.

Palm Beach Atlantic and Carson-Newman tied for 11th place with 865, followed by Union University (874), Lynn (885), Kentucky Wesleyan (885), Hillsdale (887), Virginia Union (891), Georgia College (896), Embry-Riddle (898) and Eckerd (905).

Keiser’s Isac Wallin claimed medalist honors as he posted a 17-under score of 65-67-67=199, six stroke better than second place Adrian Soriano of Saint Leo (63-69-73=205).

Cain’s 67 included an eagle, five birdies, 10 pars and two bogeys as he logged his second sub-70 round of his young career.

Tusculum’s Dominic Barron Holden tied for 36th with 69-75-74=218, while Blake Williams climbed 15 spots up the leaderboard in his final round with 76-74-70=220. Liam van Deventer shot 77-77-71=225 to finish 75th and Isak Holter carded 75-71-81=227 to place 79th in the one of the strongest fields the Pioneers will play in this year.

TU returns to action next week (Feb. 26-27) as the travel to Pawley’s Island, South Carolina for the Barton Spring Bulldog Clash.
