The boys’ tennis team from Greeneville earned the right to host the regional championship on Thursday afternoon after securing the district title earlier in the week. They would host one of the top teams in the state, Science Hill.
The Hilltoppers came out strong and showed that they would be a team to be reckoned with at the state level with the 4-0 victory, claiming their sixth consecutive Region 1-2A title.
Newton Raff got the better of the Greene Devils’ Nick Thomas 6-0, 6-0 at the #3 seed, while Cooper Weems shut out Ace Patel by the same score in the #4 slot.
Cooper Weems added to the lead with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Dominic Tweed at #5, while #2 seeded Shreeyan Papireddy finished it off with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jack Lampe.
Science Hill’s current #1 player Daniel Haddadin was leading his match 6-5 over Greeneville’s Jackson Weems when the match was called with no need for doubles.
The Hilltoppers now advance to the sectional round, needing just one more win to return to the state tournament for a fifth straight time, excluding the COVID-19 season of 2020 when the season was cancelled.
