The Greeneville Flyboys scored the game-winning run in sudden death on a seven-inning Sunday against the Kingsport Axmen to win the game with an official score of 5-5.
The Flyboys (14-16) were down to their final out in the seventh inning against the Axmen (15-15). Joel Dragoo came through with an RBI double to tie the game at 5-5. It was Dragoo’s 27th RBI of the season which is the second most in the Appalachian League. Dragoo had two doubles in the game and now has 11 on the season, which is the most in the league by two. Dragoo also extended his on-base streak to a league-leading 22 games.
Daniel Eagen pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to send the game into sudden death. Under sudden death rules, the home team gets to decide whether it wants to play offense or defense. The offensive team gets a runner placed on first base and if they score any runs, then they win. If the defense pitches a scoreless half-inning, then they win. The game is always over after an additional half-inning. No official statistics are kept in the sudden death inning.
The Flyboys will start a home-and-home series tonight against the first-place Johnson City Doughboys (20-8) in Johnson City. A link to listen to the game can be found on the Flyboys website.
