Greeneville’s soccer team opened their conference portion of their schedule at Burley Stadium on Tuesday night and shut out the Grainger Grizzlies 8-0. Although it took the Devil’s offense a little while to find the back of the net, they dominated pretty much every aspect of the game from the start, finishing with 16 shots on goal and denying their opponents any scoring opportunities. All in all, the Devil offense outshot the Grizzlies 36-1.
The scoring barrage began in the 24th minute of the game, where the Greene Devils scored three goals in less than a minute. Jude Dyer started the scoring when he would tap one in from the front of the net off the assist from Connor Stayton. On the ensuing possession, just 43 seconds later, Austin Beets found Sam Gourley for the tap in and the 2-0 lead.
Beets picked up Greeneville’s next two scoring opportunities, one in the 25th minute and the other in the 34th, sending the Devils to the half leading 4-0.
The reining conference champs came out in the second half and pick up where they left off. Gourley sent a pass to Christian Banegas in the 45th minute, which would get tapped to the corner of the net for the 5-0 advantage. Connor Stayton joined the scoring parade with two goals in just over a minute. He collected a rebound goal in the 69th minute of the contest, followed by a blast from 18 yards out in the 70th, putting Greeneville on top 7-0.
Finally, with seconds remaining in the game, Holden Dalton would finalize the 8-0 win by scoring from beyond the box.
With the win, Greeneville improves to 4-2 on the year, but more importantly 1-0 in the conference. They will be back in action this weekend (Friday, Saturday, & Sunday) as they travel to Gatlinburg to compete in the Smoky Mountain Cup at the Rocky Top Sports Complex.
