ROGERSVILLE – Greeneville football coach Eddie Spradlen stresses every year that his team’s first focus entering the season is being Region 1-4A champions, and on Friday the Greene Devils took their first step toward reaching that goal by taking down Cherokee 46-0.
The Greene Devils wasted little time getting on the board and less that 1:30 into the contest All-State running back Carson Quillen went right up the middle for an eight-yards touchdown to start things off for the Greene Devils 6-0 after the missed PAT.
Just a few minutes later, with 7:25 left in the opening frame, Caden Baugh hit Zaydyn Anderson on a deep 38-yard bomb down the sideline leaving the defender in the dust to make the score 12-0 after the failed two point try.
Coach Eddie Spradlen said “Caden ran it hard, Carson ran it hard, we got the ball out to the edge and got them involved and our game plan worked out the way we wanted it to.”
With 2:01 left in the 1st quarter, Baugh took an option play right up the middle for a 15-yard touchdown to make the score 18-0 after the missed PAT.
Then 22 seconds into the second quarter Baugh went up the middle again, this time for a 50-yard touchdown to make the score 25-0.
Baugh ended his night with 101 rushing yards on eight attempts and two touchdowns. He added another 137 yards through the air on 6-of-9 passing with a touchdown pass.
Less than three minutes later the Greene Devils got down the field again with Quillen going up the middle 44-yards for the touchdown to extend the Greene Devils lead to 32-0.
With just a couple seconds left on the clock in the 2nd quarter, Quillen did it again by adding to the Greene Devils total with a two-yard touchdown plunge that pushed the lead to 39-0.
Quillen ended the night with 73 yards on eight carries with three touchdowns.
With a running clock in the second half, the Greene Devils got on the board one last time in the third quarter when Maddox Bishop darted 20 yards up the middle for a touchdown to get us to our final score of 46-0.
Greeneville had 402 yards of offense while Cherokee had 157 yards.
