“Titletown” will have an opportunity to add a few more nameplates to the signs as both the Greeneville High School baseball and soccer teams advanced this weekend to the 2023 TSSAA Spring Fling.

After an abrupt shower moved the GHS baseball game against Gibbs from Thursday to a doubleheader on Friday, Greeneville focused on winning two to avoid a possible Sunday matchup. In game one, it was one of the most impressive pitching performances of the season by both starters. Greeneville’s Carson Quillen would throw a no-hit, shutout as the Greene Devils would knock off Gibbs 4-0. The Gibbs starter, Reilly Byers, would also throw a no-hitter but would give up five walks and reach his maximum pitch count. With base-runners on that were walked by Byers, a base hit from Corbin Cannon would score two runs giving Byers a rare no-hit loss.

In game two, it would be more walks that would doom the Eagles as Gibbs would walk 13 Greeneville batters as the Greene Devils would come back from a first-inning 3-0 deficit to defeat, and eliminate the Eagles, 7-3. Parker Shipley would strikeout 12 batters in a complete game victory while Maddox Bishop would go 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs.

With the win, Greeneville advances to the Spring Fling for the first time since 2018 and will play Brighton at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday from Smyrna High School.

On Saturday, the Greeneville soccer team would be powered by four goals from Spencer Robinson and would shut out Seymour 7-0 to advance to the 12th straight Spring Fling.

Austin Beats would add two goals and Connor Stayton would add one in the Greeneville victory as the Greene Devils close in on the school record for wins in a single season. With the win, the Greene Devils will play in the Class AA State Tournament set to begin on Tuesday against Millington at 7:00 p.m. CT from the Siegel Soccer Complex in Murfreesboro.

Radio Greeneville’s coverage of the Spring Fling begins on Tuesday with coverage of Greeneville baseball, soccer, and tennis as well as North Greene softball and each local representative in the Track & Field State Championships throughout the week.
