Greeneville’s Zaydyn Anderson Signs With Tennessee Football

A packed auditorium at Greeneville High School cheered him on as Zaydyn Anderson achieved a dream on Wednesday afternoon when he signed his letter of intent to join the football program at the University of Tennessee.

“If feels good to sign today and I’m excited to get up there soon. I’ve put a lot of work in to get to this point, and for it all to come together right now is really special,” Anderson said.

Anderson has been a three-sport athlete at Greeneville, and played at the highest level in all of them. In track he has won four individual state championships, in basketball he was the starting point guard on a state tournament team, and in football he was a Mr. Football semifinalist.

But football has always been the sport he loves most, and Anderson is excited for the chance to get to keep playing on the biggest stage in college football.

“It means a lot to me to get keep playing football,” Anderson said. “I’ve been playing my whole life and I love football. Football is what I played the most growing up and I didn’t want to let that go.”

Anderson will leave Greeneville as one of the best receivers to ever come through the program. He finished his senior year with 40 receptions for 1,169 yards and 18 touchdowns.

He owns the program record for touchdowns in a season, touchdowns in a game (4) and receiving yards in a game (245). He is second in program history for single-season receiving yards, career receiving yards (2,352), and career touchdown receptions (33).

“What a great young man,” Greeneville coach Eddie Spradlen said. “He’s the ultimate team player, it has never been about him. When your best players are your hardest workers you have a chance to be successful. He has proven that.”

At Tennessee Anderson will be focusing on defense. His stats are not as eye popping on that side of the ball, but that in large part is because from his cornerback spot Anderson’s coverage has been so proficient that quarterbacks refuse to throw his direction.

“It’s a position that you can make a play at any time. At receiver you have to wait to make a play, but on defense you can go make your own plays. I feel like I’m good with coverage, but I need work on my tackling and get bigger. That is what I’ll be focusing on when I get there.” Anderson said.

Anderson had opportunities to play elsewhere, and many programs would have coveted his abilities on the track, but playing for the Big Orange has always been a dream for Anderson. He grew up rooting for the Volunteers, and the opportunity to play for them was too much to pass up.

“It means a lot to stay close to home and stay near my family,” Anderson said. “I’ve always grown up a Tennessee fan, my parents have been Tennessee fans. I went on my official visit and I really liked the coaches. I felt like it was a place that I could really develop.”

Anderson will major in business or sports management and want to work in sports when his time playing football is done.

He plans to graduate from Greeneville early and will join the Volunteers in the coming weeks before starting classes in the spring semester.

Anderson, a four-star prospect, is part of an exciting recruiting class at Tennessee that ranks seventh in the country and third in the Southeastern Conference.
