North Greene enters Friday night fresh off its fourth-straight win and looks to add to its school-record win streak as they host Williamsburg (KY) this week.
It’s been quite a long time since the North Greene Huskies have strung together the amount of wins they have. Williamsburg is looking to play spoiler on Friday night as they’ll make the two-hour drive down to Baileyton. The Yellow Jackets picked up a 54-7 win at their house last year against a beat-up North Greene team. With a much-improved squad and experience under their belt, the Huskies could be seeing their toughest test yet on Friday night.
“They’re well coached and they do a good job. I would’ve liked to have seen us against them at full strength. It would’ve been a more competitive game. I don’t know if the outcome changes or not. They are not the same team they were last year and we are not the same team we were last year. Kind of throw last year out of the equation,” Huskies Head Coach Eric Tilson stated.
To get the job done coach Tilson knows senior quarterback Nate Goodin must be contained. He accounted for four touchdowns in last season’s game and can extend any play with his feet.
Coach Tilson explained, “He is a very talented player. He’ll be the fastest player on the field and he’ll probably be the best player we face all season. He’s just that talented.”
Williamsburg is coming into the contest with a 2-1 record. Their hot offense is averaging 37 points-per-game and most recently put up 56 points at home against Waggener (KY).
“They like to throw the ball quite a bit. He can make things happen. They’re scary on offense. The past few games showed they can score some points,” Tilson stated.
Their defense is allowing a modest 22 points-per-game and is very similarly structured like North Greene’s own defense. “They are a three-down unit and they can get into a stack look. They get to primarily 3-4 against the type of stuff we do,” Coach Tilson said.
The Huskies almost broke a school record with 56 points in their most recent outing with Hancock County. That improved their season scoring average to 35 points-per-game. Their hard-nosed defense has only allowed more than 22 points once this season and holds an average of 17 points-per-game halfway through the season.
The secret, but not-so-secret, weapon for North Greene might be running back Yeshua Vaught. He missed last year’s game in Kentucky and has never stepped foot on a field opposite of Williamsburg.
“We need to be able to establish the run game especially this Friday. Also looking at the weather it’s going to be wet and sloppy and we need to be able to establish the line of scrimmage which is something we can do this week,” Coach Tilson mentioned.
North Greene is currently 4-1 (2-0) at the midway point this year and locked themselves into the TSSAA playoffs last week with their win over the Indians. To prepare themselves for what lies ahead in November, Coach Tilson and the Huskies will be treating this game like a postseason matchup.
“If you’re a competitor you should be excited about a game like this. This is a playoff-type game. This is something to help us prepare for the second or third round when you’re playing against a really good team,” he stated.
The Huskies are looking for their 5th-consecutive win on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 on The Tundra. North Greene has never won five games in a row in program history.
“I hope our competitors are excited about this matchup. We’re going to get tested and I’m excited to get tested. In the past I would not necessarily be excited about getting tested, but I am excited about our team and excited about the matchup we have this week,” Tilson concluded with.
