WINGATE, N.C. — Wingate University scored three times in the first 24 minutes and went on to a 3-1 victory over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer Wednesday afternoon.

Sophia Husted, Manu Baptista Filipe and Audu Halldorsdottir scored for the Bulldogs (3-0-2, 2-0-0 SAC), who outshot the Pioneers (2-5-0, 0-2-0 SAC) by a 26-9 margin. Sydney Grant scored for the Pioneers with just over three minutes remaining to help Tusculum avoid the shutout.

Wingate scored one minute into the match as a shot by Yasmin Cowley off a corner kick was saved by Tusculum keeper Angel Chase, but Husted scored her second of the year on the rebound for a quick 1-0 Bulldogs lead.

The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 2-0 at 10:47 as Angela Maino passed back to Baptista Filipe, who blasted a shot from 20 yards over Chase for her fifth goal of the season.

Wingate pushed its lead to 3-0 at 23:45 as Halldorsdottir collected a pass from Katherine Ensalaco down the left side, made a move and blasted a shot to the upper near corner for her second goal of the year.

The Bulldogs nearly stretched their lead in the 35th minute, but Chase extended to her right to make a stop off an attempt from Wingate’s Julia Boaventura. Chase would again stop Boaventura to her right in the 75th minute.

Tusculum had a pair of attempts in the 67th minute, but a shot from Grant went high and a chance from Addison Rishling was stopped by Wingate keeper Haley Faucette.

The Pioneers got on the board with 3:06 left as Grant collected a pass from Maia Scott and broke in behind the Bulldogs’ defense. Her shot from the top of the box was deflected by keeper Sydney Schnarr and bounced off the goalpost, but Grant was able to tap in her third goal of the season.

Chase played the entire match in goal for Tusculum and collected eight saves, while Faucette had four stops in 79 minutes and Schnarr made one save in 11 minutes.

Wingate had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks over Tusculum, while the Bulldogs were called for 11 fouls to seven for the Pioneers.

Tusculum is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. at Pioneer Field against Anderson. The Trojans carried a 4-1-0 overall record and a 1-1 SAC mark into their non-conference match on Wednesday evening at Lander.
