The Greeneville Lady Greene Devils clinched the District 2-AA championship in impressive style on Thursday night, overpowering Volunteer by a score of 7-0 at Fox Field.
The victory not only marked a commanding postseason performance for Greeneville but also represented its 21st consecutive District Title.
From the outset, Greeneville asserted its control over the game, maintaining nearly total possession. The breakthrough came around the 10-minute mark when Angelyn Diaz unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box, setting the tone for the evening.
Volunteer struggled to make an impact, managing only one foray into Greeneville’s half of the field during the first 20 minutes.
The Lady Devils doubled their advantage shortly thereafter, with Matea Gray delivering a precise finish. Just five minutes later, a strong save by Volunteer keeper Chloe Sanders left the ball spilled in front of goal, allowing Kinsley Spradlin to slot home the rebound, extending Greeneville’s lead to 3-0.
Moments later, Peyton Vaught capitalized on yet another rebound following an initial save, pushing the margin to 4-0. Despite the relentless pressure from Greeneville, Sanders showed resilience in goal, thwarting several long-range attempts.
Around the 35th minute, Vaught struck again, completing a well-timed setup from Diaz and pushing the score to 5-0. The first half concluded with Greeneville maintaining a commanding hold on possession, while Volunteer managed to cross midfield only twice.
The second half commenced in a similar fashion, with the Lady Devils continuing their offensive onslaught and controlling the tempo of play, despite a series of long-range shots missing their target. Roughly 60 minutes into the match, Gray netted her second goal, capitalizing on a well-placed corner from Marley VanBuskirk. In the closing 15 minutes, Elaina Philbeck added the seventh goal with a high, arcing shot set up by Vivian Kammerdiener.
Volunteer struggled to find any offensive rhythm, managing meaningful possession in Greeneville’s half just a handful of time throughout the night.
When asked about the disparity in time of possession, Head Coach Jerry Graham said, “They did an extraordinary job of executing our game plan tonight. That’s what we’ve been working on for the past week or so, just working on breaking a low block with precision passing.”
Despite a commendable effort from Sanders, the relentless attack from the Lady Devils proved insurmountable, culminating in a decisive 7-0 victory as they celebrated yet another district title.
