ELIZABETHTON – The Greeneville girls golf team dominated the field on Monday as it captured the District 1-A championship at Elizabethton Golf Course.
The Lady Greene Devils had the three best individual scores of the day as they outdistanced second place by 40 strokes.
“It feels good going into the regionals knowing that we had the top three scores today. I felt like we played well as a team today,” Greeneville’s Kamryn Renner said. “Our goal is to get to state and we have to come back and do it again next week at region to get there. We need to make sure we are working on our putting and short game over the next week.”
Greeneville’s Kamryn Renner finished first overall to claim the individual district championship on Monday with a 78.
“I felt like I played well today. Things got off to a little bit of a rough start, but I eventually pulled things together,” Renner said. “I had some tough competition from Brylee (Catron) and Kylee (Renner) and the Chuckey-Doak girls and it felt good to pull off the win. My putting was good today and my irons were pretty decent, that was the key.”
Brylee Catron was second with an 80 and Kylee Renner was third with an 81. As a team the Lady Greene Devils shot a 158. Elizabethton was in second place with a 198.
“This girls won district and region last year and they are hungry to get back to state,” Greeneville coach Nathan Hale said. “Coach (Sasha) Catron and (Todd) Ricker get all of the credit for working with them throughout the year and making them better. They have all improved since last year and they have big goals.”
The Chuckey-Doak girls finished in third place and earned a spot in next week’s Region 1-A Tournament as well. The Lady Black Knights shot a 204 as a team led by Harley Thompson who had a 93 and was fourth as an individual. Kyleigh Crawford shot a 111 and Addilyn Boesch 124.
South Greene’s Khloe Laws (109), Volunteer’s Baylyn Rose (95), Sullivan East’s Hayden Pierson (97), University High’s Kalaini Nabalta (99) and Cherokee’s Kierce Manis (109) advanced to the region tournament as individuals.
In the boys tournament Greeneville finished tied with Elizabethton at 317 through 18 holes, but in a one-hole playoff the Cyclones were able to capture the District 1-A championship.
The difference was a birdie from Bryson Hardin in the playoff. Hardin was also the individual champion with a 70.
Nate Howlett led Greeneville with a 74 and won a three-hole playoff with South Greene’s Brennan Gregg to claim second place as an individual. Carson Waters shot a 76 to place fourth as an individual, Wolfgang Rabern had an 82 and Landon Aldridge 85.
“The boys had a good day. They lost in a playoff, but we’ll get to see Elizabethton again next week,” Hale said. “Moving on to the next week is all you can ask for when you are in the postseason. Some of them had rough starts today, but finished strong. If we can start a little better next week we’ll be in better shape.”
The South Greene boys finished in third place with a 330 and qualified for the regional. Gregg shot a 74 and placed third, Cameron Kinser had a 77 and was fifth as an individual, Keannan Hankins shot 78 and Ben Gosnell 109.
